I took my rifle out to collect DOPE for a 200 yard KD event. Testing from a bench rest, I got poor results downrange. 6/10 hits in the black.
What ammo do you recommend for RKD at that distance?
What scope magnification? I was using a Vortex 2-7 scope. Is that enough?
Thanks all!
I spent a day with a chronograph testing 22 ammo. All the bulk ammo very inconsistent in my testing. The CCI standard velocity was the best of the cheep bulk ammo. The more expensive stuff did much better. I found a deal on some Eley that my rifle likes. Different rifles like different ammo, it pays to test different ammo in your rifle.
A 2-7 scope should work just fine for an RKD.

Last Saturday I shot a High Power match with my Low Power 22lr. Match was shot at 200 yards, with reduced targets for the 300 & 600 stages.
Rifle used was a Tippman Elite M4-22.
I used Aguila 40 gr 1130 fps and held a 4-1/2 inch group in the prone stage.
Norma TAC-22 holds a 4-1/2 inch group at 200 yards also, with this same rifle.
The SR target (200yd) has a 3 inch X-ring and a 7 inch 10-ring.
Needless to say, I impressed quite a few people.
My scope was set at 6 power and I adjusted the parallax for better clarity.
I'm in the process of acquiring different ammo for testing.
I've taken the above mentioned ammo to 300 yards with good success, but need more elevation adjustment for the scope.
I am not aware of what rifle you're using, but try different ammo 'till you find one that works best.
Your scope of 6 or 7 power should be just fine.
Preparing for a 200 yard RKD event is most of the journey. Stay positive and enjoy the trip. The things you experience along the way will prove to be invaluable further down the road.
I wish you the best,
Chico
Some of the Ammo wouldn't shoot well for me. Browning 22 (but the package looked neat), Remington Golden Bullet, Remington Thunderbolt were not favorites.
But of the better groups in my Ruger 10/22 and my Tippmann Elite.
Blazer by CCI, Pretty good
CCI Standard Velocity, Little Better
Ely Club from the CMP, a Little better still
Then one that is harder to find and a little better still were SKS Semi Auto
Your results will surely differ in your individual rifles.
In my Ruger 10/22, CCI standard velocity works well, 4x is enough on the scope.
Be shire you have enough elevation about 33MOA at 200yds.
I've only shot a couple of RKD events.
Using a 10/22 with the same Vortex 2-7 Scope.
I came close with CCi Standard Velocity but had better results with CCi Minimags and then Aguila Super Extra HV. My Rifleman scores were with Minimags.
With the Vortex 2-7 I never dialed more than 4x.
Depends on your gun, but if it can shoot Eley well, then Eley Benchrest Outlaw.
The extra 2 grains help the bullet fight wind a little bit.
I've shot rimfire KD a few times now. My go to ammo is CCI standard velocity. I have a Nikon 2-7 rimfire scope on an 10/22 Sporter and I like mine on 7x.
Attached is a photo of me in the foreground using that rifle and ammo in (of all things!) a rapid fire 200 yard KD. That was July 2022 in Talkeetna Alaska. Scored a respectable 45x50.

While we're on the subject of ammo:
I've always used mainly CCI Standard Velocity. Every now and then CCI Minis.
I've never bought any of the high end stuff. I was thinking about buying some 'Wolf Gold Match Extra' which is made by Eley. Is the high dollar stuff really all that much better? I mean I'm sure it's going to be somewhat better but is it really worth it?
BTW: I was able to get about a 1.5 MOA group at 200yds with my Tippman using CCI SV. So it worked well.
I think it all depends on your rifle, with my precision rifle, I've tried 25+ brands and types, from $3 to $30 per box. The higher-dollar ones do seem to have fewer misfires for sure, but they do have them.
On average the higher dollars do tend to shoot a little better, but with my Particular rifle, $5 CCi SV shoots better groups than any of the others out to 100 yards, SK rifle match seems slightly better at 150-200.
$20-25 Lapua is close to them but isn't as tight, so I'll take the $5 option.

Just keep doing what you're doing . . .
My RKD qual was with Minimags, but that was what that particular rifle liked to cycle and group well. Standard Velocity imo is called "standard" for a reason. My other rifle does ~2MOA with it.
I'd always preferred the Federal bulk pack ammo because it was copper plated - ostensibly less lead-fouling. But then I went down to my local (indoor) range to test ammo at 25, 50 and 100 yards out of a new(ish) rifle.
I was VERY surprised at the results. CCI SV was easily twice as accurate out of my K10/22-T as the Federal bulk. I didn't take pictures, but the difference was 2-3 MOA groups for CCI SV and 5-6 MOA groups from the Federal.
The CCI had greater drop at 100 yards, however. If I was going to do a 200-yard RFKD as a shooter, I'd try CCI minimags as well, hoping for the best of both worlds - as accurate as the SV, less drop like the Federal.

This G&A article is an interesting study of rimfire ammo for shooting longer distances.
I realize this is an older thread, but does anyone have experience with the Armscor ammo for sale at the CMP eStore (sku 50015PH) in a stock 10/22?
Thanks,
Desert_Diver
I have not gotten any from CMP, so results may vary with their lot.
All the Armscor I've shot has had extremely inconsistent ignition in all of my 10/22's.
Bolt action Marlin and Taurus pistol don't seem to mind it.
Not sure if it's the rim thickness or primer compound, but I can only get 5-7 shots out of a magazine in my Rugers.
MrZeke,
That's helpful feedback. I cannot justify the of purchase such a large quantity of ammo with the possibility of poor performance.
Thanks,
Desert_Diver
The Backfire channel on YouTube did a whole video on 22lr.
I have a Tippman Elite and use the Aguila 40gr copper plated extra velocity.
