Title: MOA/POA Question
Post by: Cheeks on April 10, 2009, 12:59:54 PM
At my local range, the targets have to be at 5.5 feet off the ground, and can only be set at distances of 25, 50, and 75 yards. This makes prone shooting at 25 yards unsafe b/c the bullets would be launching over the berm due to the angle.

So, to shoot prone, it would probably be best if I was doing it at 75 yards. My question is this:

Is a 1 inch square at 25 yards approximately equal to a 3 inch square at 75 yards?

Also, how much will my POA be affected using a .22 at 75 yards vs. 25 yards. I'm using a 10/22 with TSR200 Tech Sights if that affects the answer. CCI Mini-Mags.

Thanks in advance.

1 inch is to 25 yds as 3 inches is to 75 yds.
POI at 75 versus 25?  Just shoot it and see.  Adjust elevation accordingly.

You are correct!  Just upsize the square to 3 inches. (Something to do with minutes of angle or something... ^-^)  You will have to adjust the sights to strike the square in the center at 75 yards, but it can be done easily enough. However, once you sight in for 75 yards you'll have to re-zero for any other distance.

I like your "Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome" attitude!  Those 4 minute squares combined with the six steps to fire the shot, NPOA, proper sling use, etc will improve your shooting like you won't believe, and you'll have to handle a little wind, something we don't usually see at 25 yards!

Cheeks, here's something to check for ballistics.

Cheeks, at my home range I have the same situation, even though it's the same facility that we will be shooting the Sacramento Appleseed at next week, during the rest of the time there's no place to practice prone at 25 meters.

The method I've used to practice "prone" is to get a taller chair and belly up to the bench. That allows me to get my arms into proper position, it also replicates the sight movement you'll see in prone while you're breathing. This way I can practice getting my NPOA set at the bottom of my breath and squeezing off a round every couple seconds. It's not perfect but at the very least I've learned how to shoot with a slab of concrete in my belly.

We'll find out next week how well it has worked.
