Title: Mossberg 42?
Post by: gunville on April 04, 2009, 01:45:42 AM
I stumbled on a Mossberg 42 the otherday. It's a bolt action .22. It seems very similar to the Mossberg 44's CMP has, but I'm not sure of the differences. (Not sure what sights the Moss 44 has - these were standard factory fair - like what you get on a Marlin 795.)

Does anyone know the differences rifles?

they were asking a measly $75.  I must be crazy  #) for not picking it up, but I don't like wall hangers and wasn't sure what I was getting into. (Moss 44's are $175 at CMP without a mag.)

I hate when I practice restraint in gun stores, but it let's me eat.

Google Mossberg Model 42; there's info out there.  Basically made in the 30's and 40's in models A through M.  Mossberg magazines can be hard to find, and rifles that old didn't come with the 3/8" receiver scope dovetail.

IIRC the 42 takes the same magazine as the 44, which means they are EXPENSIVE but available.  Might check Brownells or Havelin Sales to see if my memory is correct.

The M44s either had Mossberg S100 or Lyman (or even possibly Redfield) peep rear sights.  The Mossberg S100 rear sight swings out of the way to remove the bolt, I think the other rear sights have to be taken apart to do that.

Front sights were mostly just post sights on dovetails.

The first batch of M44s the CMP had sold for $75.00 each WITHOUT THE MAG.  The mags are about $40.00 each for reproductions, no one has found the originals yet.
