Title: Sidney, OH Pistol Clinic April 1-2, 2023 AAR
Post by: Shep on April 05, 2023, 01:54:51 PM
Our first Appleseed event in Sidney, Ohio, was held on the Shelby County Sherriff's Range, beginning Saturday morning April 1. The April Fool's joke was on us in the form of weather conditions. Its an awesome range, and is well protected from wind on three sides, but guess which way the 30-50 MPH winds were coming from! Falling temperatures throughout the afternoon brought a few flakes of snow to confirm what we already knew, IT WAS COLD OUT!

But on the positive side, we had a great group of ten enthusiastic shooters. This was a private pistol event scheduled in cooperation with the Sheriff's Department to present an Appleseed Pistol Clinic to Church security teams.  Instruction was well received through the day as skill levels rose. We did have one new shooter who has never fired a pistol before, but felt the need to learn so he could help aid in the security of his Church.

The weather got the best of us in the afternoon and we called it a day around 3:00, with hopes of better conditions tomorrow.

Sunday morning arrived with near freezing temperatures, but very little wind! Enthusiasm was high as we began opening reviews, and soon started live fire instruction and drills. Improvement was apparent as the morning went on.

Sunday afternoon we had a fun shoot with dueling trees, one tree was heavy steel for center fire pistols, and one was lighter for those shooting .22. Guess who won the center fire competition? Yup, it was Brian our new shooter; less than thirty hours before he had never fired a pistol! Looks like the instruction worked; thanks go to Doc Willi, who was at his shoulder all day Saturday.

We had one new Pistoleerâ„¢, congratulations to Mike M. who scored 218 with his 9mm Glock.  Mike also won a special copper coin awarded for highest scoring PQT of the event, thanks to Sparky117 for his thoughtful donation. Jeff M. joined the line on Sunday and reconfirmed with scores of 217 and 214.

Despite the challenges by Mother Nature, the shoot was a big success. I think all would agree they left Sunday with improved skills and a plan for moving forward with those skills. Thanks go to the Shelby County Sheriff's Department, Sergeant Spicer, Deputy McRill, and our own WildBillCody for setting this event up. Hopefully this will be the first of many Appleseeds on this range. Also, thanks to our great instructor's team of Doc Willi, ChiefLane, Shadow870 and WildBillCody.
