Title: The Magpul RLS Sling
Post by: Will on March 27, 2023, 08:58:01 PM
I built a new rifle out of  "junk" AR15 parts, stuff left over from a dozen builds...The buttstock I used doesn't really have a good way to attach a traditional GI sling, so I dug into my pile of stuff and came up with a Magpul Riflemans Loop Sling.

I shot an AQT with it this last weekend with my pieces parts rifle and while it takes some getting used to its fast to get into, cheap and almost as stable as a GI sling. I'm still figuring out the fine details of using it but it's interesting.

Anyone use one? Got any pointers?

I put one on my AR because I'm using an after market stock that doesn't have a sling swivel on the back.  I like that you don't need to disconnect a j-hook to have a loop for prone/sitting.  There are some good videos on YouTube that explain how to adjust it.

Use them heavily while I don't think you can get quite as tight the Gi sling in terms of a loop set up. I think  the ability to quickly get in and out of it and able to use all three sling positions without taking the sling off. Make it the superior choice atleast for me.

The only pointers I'll give you is to spend the time to really get the sling at just the right length for what you want. When I give them out as loaners I'll spend an extra 3 minutes sizing the shooter up so they have less issues.

If your having trouble with the keeper being to stiff then I recommend sitting upright on the couch with your arm in the loop  and the stock of the rifle on your belt line. Let the rifle hang away from you creating tension on the sling itself. Keep your support hand on the rifle and come over the top with your firing hand and push the keeper down to tighten the loop. Then still keeping that tension, slide the keeper back up the sling as far as it will go.

Do that around 100-1000 times or the length of 2 episodes of magnum PI and you will have a  much smoother keeper

Very much enjoy my RLS. Took it to a 'scoped carbine' class (prone, out to 500 yards) where 15 out of 16 students were on bipods. I outshot most, and held my own with the rest.

There's a whole thread on this sling that might be helpful here: https://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=62288.0
