If you haven't been to Perryville, it's a pretty little community in Missouri. I arrived after dark on Friday and didn't get to see much, but Saturday morning was eye opening!
Our IBC was scheduled to be held in the Perryville Higher Education Center. When we drove up... that building sure looked like an old church.
Outside waiting for us was Flintlock54, the Missouri SC. He greeted us warmly and showed us to the classroom. He mentioned that this building used to be part of a very large seminary that was established in the early 1800s!
After we got checked in, Flintlock54 volunteered to give us a tour of the beautiful building. Currently, it's leased by a local community college and one of their employees is very Appleseed-friendly. :)
Once we began and had introductions, I realized that we had instructors from Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Arkansas, and Alabama in the room! We had a full day of instruction, learning how to teach in the Appleseed method - with simplicity and precision. We broke down into small groups for the exercises. Small group leaders 209Ken and Flintlock54 showed their metal as they mentored fellow instructors. We worked a full day, wrapping up about 6pm.
Our dinner reservations got a little tangled, so we made a decision to commandeer the lobby of a local hotel and order pizza! I think we sat around talking until well after 10!
Sunday morning, we got warmed up and then jumped deep into IMC. It was a pleasure to watch the IITs presenting that block of instruction smoothly. At lunch, we had the history drill. This was the highlight of the weekend for me. Those boys from Missouri sure can tell history! It was wonderful to see how seriously the students had prepared their assignments, going to multiple sources to prepare for the event. Peer critiques on public speaking were constructive and uplifting!
We wrapped up with a crash course in coaching techniques.
To everyone who came out to our IBC - thank you. Thanks for taking the time to invest in yourself and become more effective at advancing our Mission.
My thanks to Flintlock54 for helping to secure the venue and being such a gracious host. My thanks to both Google and Captain who helped make the IBC a success.
