I recently purchased a M44 carbine. As I was field stripping the rifle to clean it, the rear barrel band spring broke. I'm having trouble finding a set of barrel band springs, any suggestions? I figure if one broke the other is soon to follow.

In reading the other MN thread I saw people were using rubbing alcohol and or Windex to remove the Cosmoline. Is this common practice?
I haven't dealt with this guy my self but I heard good things form some of my friends.
Omega Weapons Systems (520) 889-8895

You can try: www.buymilsurp.com
Here's a link to the MN section: http://www.buymilsurp.com/rifle-parts-accessories-mosin-nagant-c-3548_2.html
They have the bands, but the retainers are out of stock-right now.
They also have replacement stocks, if you wanted to get yourself a nice laminate.
Sarco.com (Sarco) and e-gunparts.com (Numrich).
Both are good folks, though, they are in NJ and NY respectively.
Sarco runs ads in Shotgun News.
Here's the rifle I'm talking about. If you ask me the stock is about as good as I can ask for.
Thanks for the help on locating the part.
What about cleaning tips, any success stories?
Here are a couple method for cleaning cosmoline from a gun:

I am sure there are others methods too.
Tennessee Gun Parts has great customer service and are the owners of surplusrifle.com Here is their parts page for the M44:

Funny, I just got a 91/30 with the same issue. Must be the only part on a Mosin to break. :))
Seems the barrel band retaining springs are out of stock at the Tn. Gun Parts link. There are some other suppliers on line but the spring is running 12-14 dolllars.
I used to wedge the barrel band in with a wood shim when the springs broke on the original Civil War muskets I used to play with years ago. Might make a field expedient fix until the part comes.

Nope, my 91/30's mag follower snapped at the pin-hole first time out to the range. Had to get a spare parts bag from TAPCO back when they sold the the GP.
An outfit called Springfield Sporters advertised Mosin parts in a recent Shotgun News.

I guess after a century of neglect even this is possible.
I decided to shoot my MG without the rear barrel band spring, not sure if it's recommended, I didn't have any issues. The barrel got hot and expanded, after a few shots the barrel band wasn't going anywhere.
The accuracy on my particular rifle was hideous however. Any tips on correcting this? The elevation is good but the horizontal adjustments need work. Any ideas on adjusting the horizontal value of the sights?
The front sight adjusts for windage. I ordered a tool for it here:
http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting/mosinsights/index.asp
That sight has lots of good info for Mosins including a fluff/buff for the trigger here:
http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting2006/improvingm44carbines/index.asp
Also might want to try extending the bayonet and check your groups. M44's were designed to be shot that way, though some folks report it does not matter.
There are often hideous variations among the various mil-surp ammo.
The Mosins often show up at Appleseeds.
Hammer and punch will work.
However, some are staked in place and once you move them they slide right out.(i.e. my m38; one bump last hunting season and I almost lost it forever) Lock-tite fixed that!
I know what you're thinking: 'Why does it always come back to lock-tite?'
Are you shooting to the right or left?
As aftermath mentioned, windage is a brass punch and hammer - I'm surprised it's off. Mine has a mark made by the red army armorer (sp?) aligning the base and the sight.
Are you sure it's the windage adjustment, and not the 18# trigger taking it off the mark? ;)
The elevation - especially at 25M - generally does need correction though.
An elevation "adjustment" mentioned on some surplus boards is to heat shrink tube over the existing front sight and then trim it to the right height. (Yeah, it's a little M-I-C-K-E-Y, )
I'll second the suggestion to shoot the M44 with the bayo extended. They were regulated for exactly that, and mine will shoot about 12" low and 12" left at 100yd if it is not extended. With it extended it becomes surprisingly accurate.

I replaced my 91/30 sights with Mojo Micro Click sights. Elevation and windage at the rear sight.

Google up moisinnagant.net and surf around Vics site. They have TONS of g3 over there including parts suppliers. Accuracy? Have the bore slugged as some come out a tight .311 and some are a loose .312. All the popular bullet sellers have match bullets for this rifle. My M-39 prefers the sierra 178s <:)
