This past weekend, fifteen Appleseeders from Ohio, Michigan, and Kentucky gathered at Liberty Center, Ohio (isn't that just an awesome name?) for a Great Lakes Shoot Boss Camp!
It's part leadership, part marksmanship, part adminstration... and ALL MISSON!
We were hosted by Henry County Sportsmen's Association, who has been a long-time supporter of Project Appleseed.
Ohio State Coordinator Charley met me on Friday evening to get the classroom setup and we discovered that the new addition we planned on using was under maintenance. That's okay, IAO is what we do. There was plenty of space and it was closer to the kitchen. Speaking of the kitchen... Charley's mom helped keep us fed all weekend long! Thank you so much!
Saturday morning arrived quicker than I expected... and it was sure cold for this Alabama boy.
After we got settled in, we quickly got to business. We discussed our Appleseed Mission and our part in it as Shoot Bosses. For the next two (very full) days, we'd talk about leadership challenges, time management (on and off the line), preparing for an event, and mentoring instructors. I'm very proud of everyone... we worked until 7pm Saturday.
It wouldn't be a Shoot Boss Camp, if we didn't dedicate time to learning the hows and whys of Known Distance, practicing our presentations, and how to run an effective KD component at a 25m event.
On Sunday, we were able to wrap up a little early, got a group picture, and cleaned up.
I am so grateful to everyone who dedicated this weekend to coming out and making an investment in growing the Mission.
Special thanks to: Charley's Mom - we all have to eat! SteelThunder, for your awesome contributions and help facilitating discussions. Griffin - for coming all the way from Kentucky to attend. Shep, for serving as a small group lead and having such a great sense of humor during the weekend. Cadence, for serving as a small group lead and bringing real world experience to the discussion. TWolf and BeeFree for also cheerfully serving as small group leads. O0
For those of you still working toward wearing that green hat, persist! It's the most fun and rewarding job in Appleseed!
Liberty, yo!

This was my first time attending a SBC and I'm glad I made the trip down from Detroit for it. It was very productive - great content, and great people all around. I really appreciated the opportunity to have open/frank dialogue on some important topics, including diving down some 'rabbit holes' that might be avoided as a 'can of worms' at an IBC, but in this setting it led to some productive conversations and it was great to be able to pose some tougher questions and receive candid answers. The breakouts were great and I was highly impressed with the red/orange hats who attended - future shoot bosses in the making for sure. I personally feel more confident and empowered heading into this season's events.
Thank you to MO and Charley for pulling this together, and to the club for hosting us. And yes, thanks to Charley's mom for keeping us fed!
This was another great Appleseed event and I feel privileged to have been invited to attend. Most valuable to me was to be able to interact with many experienced Shoot Bosses and witness how they analyze situations at events and come up with solutions. The written manuals are thorough but placing those concepts into action takes determination and patience.
Charley, thank you for hosting at LC. It is like home to me. MO, thank you again for coming north. I look forward to completing SBIT and joining the ranks of those special leaders.
Third Degree
What a great weekend.
Having the opportunity to participate in this IBC as Maximum Ordinate made the presentations was a special treat. Knowing that M O will seek any and every opportunity to come north and play in the snow is, well, just absolutely fantastic !
Having Shoot Bosses Cadence, Shep, T Wolf, BeeFree and Captain America attend and share their experiences and support is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the guidance and support on the break-out sessions.
All my questions were answered, even the ones I didn't know I had.
M O - thank you for making the trip.
Steel Thunder - thank you for all your input and humor.
Charley - thank you for orchestrating this IBC.
Charley's mom - thanks for the meals and helping to clean-up.
