Great Appleseed is in the books at Middletown Sportsmen's Club, Middletown, Ohio. We had 12 Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Cadets arrive ready to learn marksmanship skills & History. This included 9 beginner shooters ready to make marksman. We started the weekend with a welcome, introduction to the goals of RWVA and Project Appleseed, and our normal safety briefing.
We moved to the points of instruction (POI). The steady hold factors in prone were presented followed by the six steps and NPOA. The Cadets were given in-classroom one on one instruction, SOF, Sling up, & NPOA, using laser rifles to simulate what they would be experiencing in the actual events of the day. This pre work proved to be valuable given the experience level.
This was followed by bringing rifles to the line and we started the event on a cold Sat morning Red Coat.
Results showed we had work to do, but the Cadets were up to the challenge. We had 5 shooters of 12 put three rounds in the 100 yd target, 3 @ 200, 1 @ 300, 0 @ 400 1 joined Daniel Morgan. Work was ahead of us. End of day showed progress already, 11 @ 100; 7 @ 200 & 4 joined Daniel Morgan.
Related drills were shot after each POI and we then shot sighting groups in anticipation of IMC. We broke for lunch. IMC was presented.
At lunch we presented the First Strike and we returned to the line for sight adjustments and confirmation groups. We moved on to the steady hold in seated with related drills.
A great Second Strike at our afternoon break and we returned to the line for Steady hold in standing.
The Third Strike was presented by Meadow with a following call to action and we closed out the day.
Sunday dawned. The morning Red Coat showed more progress. We had 9 of 11 shooters at 100, 5 at 200, 3 at 300, 2 at 400, and 3 joined Daniel Morgan. Cadet Dennis cleared his first ever Red Coat. Congratulations.
We moved on to the AQT grind, with a practice AQT, which showed promise of riflemen in the future.
We shot four AQT's on Sunday. We had two Cadet shooters deliver the score. Congrats to Cadet Dennis for shooting qualifying score of 226 and Cadet Sandefur with his "christening" water from the North Bridge score of 210.
Many of the other shooters were doing great with scores starting the event in the 50 to 100's to finish the day with 170's but the pressure of the AQT was enough to keep them from getting over the hump.
The DOM's were presented throughout the day and we ended the day with the Sunday afternoon Red Coat. Results were showing improvement. We had 11 of 11 at 100, 9 at 200, 4 at 300, 2 at 400, 2 joined Daniel Morgan but nobody cleared the final Red Coat. The physical efforts needed on Sunday had taken its toll.
We officially closed the event with another call to action and a challenge for all to get involved in their communities. My thanks to the shooters for having a safe event. Our thanks again to Middletown Sportsmen's Club for hosting our event. Our thanks to the CAP organization that set this event up.
The instructor team consisted of Doc Willi; Shadow870; Rattlehead & Mac. OUTSTANDING job with all the cadets. Extraordinary one on one for two extremely new shooters by Mac (1st Lt Angelika Farina) This has earned her a new title of "Saint Mac" for her over and above work with these cadets. Additional support team was from Senior CAP member, Troy Thompson, who kept the cadets on schedule, loaded magazine (thumbs wore out) and was the key support to our Appleseed Instructor team. Thanks to ALL.
This was an outstanding event led by Meadow. The cadets were attentive and the outstanding instruction provided by the Project Appleseed instructors showed with the advancement of their skills throughout the weekend. We look forward to doing this again at the Middletown Sportsman's Club in 2023. Here are some pics.

The visual aids of posters I think is helpful for the youth. If anyone would like some they run at about $2/linear ft and can be made at the Cincinnati Public Library Maker Space.
Thank you!
