Title: Rochester, Minnesota - 17Sep2022
Post by: IXOYE on September 20, 2022, 12:11:58 AM
We had a great event in Rochester, Minnesota. The weather was a little on the warm side but our shooters persevered and showed us they have the stuff riflemen are made of. I was very encouraged by how much everyone's marksmanship skills improved. Congratulations to everyone for all their hard earned progress. Special congratulations to Owen and Marcus who earned their coveted rifleman's patch with scores of 217 and 212 respectively. Several others were knocking at the door to rifleman. I'm certain they will earn their patch if they work at it.

Many thanks to the Southern Minnesota Sportsman's Club for hosting our event. I also need to thank all of the instructors (Shannon, Mike, Scott, Greg, and Steve) for all their hard work and for spending their entire weekend helping to instruct and sharing the history of April 19th. It was a pleasure to work with such a great group of cadres.

Here are some pictures from our event! If you click on an image it will expand. Click on it again and it will shrink back down.

Thanks for posting the photos and above all for all your hard work in running this event! I was hot, sweaty, tired and bloody by the end but it was well worth it. I made tremendous leaps in my proficiency from last year, it really felt like things were starting to click.

And above all else, it's a reminder to not take our freedoms for granted. Our nation's history is not perfect by any means but one thing we definitely should appreciate is all the hard work and sacrifices on our behalf during our founding.

Haven't seen that kind of firing line in a while, remember that 7th stepping, spread the word, spread the word. @@)

Rex, thanks for running a great shoot; except for the whole hotel debacle and getting lost. :slap: Oh, and the spent casing that actually WENT INTO MY MOUTH.
I had a good time, going to a shoot in Minnesota isn't all that bad.  $$-0
I thought the shooters had great attitudes and seemed like they wanted to be there. The progress made by many was good. They were fun too. Working with Chris and Lauren on Saturday was fun. Lauren, I forgive you for tossing that casing into my mouth and the burns have more or less healed.
Chris, I still think you were playing me.  ;)
Working with Chris, Gary, and the other two guys on Sunday was a good time; Gary especially seemed to enjoy the instruction and comradery.
The other cadre were a good group.
Side note: Steve (Plinker300), now that I know what your last name is, you need to change your forum name to "One Wild and CRAZY Guy!.

P.S. When reserving non-refundable accommodations online, be sure the motel is actually near the shoot, not 43 miles away.  :wb:

Thank you, participants - it was a great weekend of learning to be better marksmen and learning more about our heritage.

Owen and Marcus - congrats on achieving your riflemen score.
Ted - oh so close at 209.
The rest of you all showed great improvement and perseverance in learning to be better Americans.

Thank you to Southern Minnesota Sportsmen Club, you supported us throughout the weekend.  It was great catching up with past volunteers and board members alike this weekend.  I look forward to holding more events there.

Fellow volunteers, thank you for assisting us with the event.  Rex, big thank you for running the event.  Greg, Mike, Scott, Steve - awesome job and I look forward to working many events with each of you.

Hi Greg,

I have to say getting a casing in the mouth is a new one, thankfully it's healed!

As for playing you, I'll take that as a compliment  O0

I had my targets from last time and this year was the first time where everything really started to click and I was feeling more at ease. Again, your invite was much appreciated as was your instruction and confidence boosts. I know I have the skills to qualify (just gotta get the kneeling stage down), the rest is in my head and the more I can relax and not beat myself up, the smoother it will be. Last time, the goal was to just make it through the event and this time I had my sights set higher. I'll also have to say your competition 10/22 was an excellent rifle, the trigger in particular.

Gary, I hope you keep shooting rifles and remember that what seems like a never ending mental checklist will become muscle memory over time. I've been shooting rifles since 2005 and the level of precision that one can accomplish in Appleseed over a weekend is amazing. Some take longer than others to learn but that's okay- perseverance is the key. It's so much easier to quit or never try than it is to give it your best, be proud of what went well and learn from what can be improved. Like the instructors said, even a miss isn't a wasted shot if you can learn from it. I liked your enthusiasm and perseverance, and most of all our tandem effort at shooting out the TV target!

The confidence I got here will help me in all aspects of life from work to my own personal projects such as artwork. On another note I found out one of my project managers is in the National Guard and he was very impressed with my groupings! So you never know where like minded people are. Maybe I can convince him to come with me the next time I go to a shoot.

On that note, does anyone know where in the Twin Cities metro area or somewhere nearby where I could practice the various shooting stages? Thankfully indoor ranges have zero issue with 22LR rifles but the only form that I could do is standing.

Check with-

Target Sports Minnesota

I think they will let you shoot from seated and prone with use of a bench. They have a bench/patform thingee that you can move into place in the booth so that your shooting elevation is more in line with the target. Having eyeballed it, it would be less than optimal, but... if you only practice under perfect conditions, you only get good under perfect conditions. Right? Something like that. Let's keep telling ourselves that.

Similar to Greg's recommendation, Become friends with your MN instructors - especially attist178, mn14man, Roberts68 and myself - we are all members at Monticello Sportsmen club and have guest privileges (and usually are looking for an excuse to go shoot).  Beyond that, Monticello Rod & Gun does annual memberships and have a 25/50 yard bay that you could practice those at.  If you are in the NW metro area, I'd also recommend getting on the Monticello Sportsmen waiting list for a share if that's a reasonable drive.  The MN Guns reddit has also had a few posts over the last year about various locations that you could also go.
