SLCFSA hosted another APPLESEED clinic this past weekend, and the cadre is forever grateful for having us!
A special thanks to the cadre for coming out Friday afternoon, after their busy workday, to set up the range for instruction!
Saturday consisted of meeting the students, parking lot detail, and getting ready for instruction. We proceeded with Uncle Fred's brief, going over the safety rules, the steps to making a safe rifle on the line, and then we posted Red Coat targets. Right off the bat, we had a cleared Red Coat!
We then posted zeroing squares, and proceeded into instruction on steady hold factors for prone position, sling usage, and the 6 steps to firing the shot. We also discussed the First strike of the AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR.
We proceeded through explaining/attaining/checking natural point of aim, carding the sights, and trigger reset.
Mind you, it was hot, and very humid. Our students were stalwart, however, and consumed copious amounts of the provided cold water while we sweated and learned.
We continued to refine and correct our rifle shooting skills, and we then went over Inches, Minutes, and Clicks, as well as evaluated our targets  for common firing line errors.
this was interspersed by rest periods in the shade of canopies, and the drinking of LOTS of water. We broke for lunch, and heard about the second strike of the match.
We shot another Red Coat target, and another cleared target was scored!
Sunday started off with a refresher of the safety rules, making a rifle safe, and placing our equipment on the line. We then refreshed the skills of the steady hold factors for prone, use of the sling, and the six steps to firing the shot. We then proceeded to steady hold factors for seated/kneeling, standing, and how to make transitions.
As we cannot shoot on Sunday until noon, we also went over the known distance portion of instruction, including target recognition, range and wind estimating, trajectory, and adjusting our sight to hit targets at the "RIFLEMAN'S HALF-MILE".
We were then excited by the retelling of the third strike of the match, which flamed into what we now call the AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR.
The floor was opened for questions and comments, and special goodies were awarded to those that could answer the 4 questions asked on Saturday, using information provided by the retelling of the three strikes.
At noon, shooters were on the firing line, with 13 rounds prepped, and ready to make their hits count on the first Red Coat target of the day. 2 more cleared targets, and substantial improvement over the first target on Saturday!
More water, and prep 5 for final zeroing targets!
AQT's were then posted, and we proceeded to go through the AQT targets first in stages, and finally a RAPID-FIRE AQT. 2 new RIFLEMEN received patches for scoring above 210, and Bruce re-qualified twice, with impressive scores!
More breaks and water were interspersed throughout the AQT grind.
We finished with a final Red Coat target, and 2 more cleared Red Coats. Patches were awarded, the benediction given, and we read a letter from John Adams, addressed to us, his POSTERITY.
The range was restored, equipment collected and rifles made safe and cased.
Questions were answered, comments given, and a hearty thanks from the cadre to the students who sweated their way through a hot and humid weekend of learning our Nation's history, and how to use their rifle!
A special thank you from me, you're ever-lovin' shoot boss, to both the students for persevering in the heat, as well as the cadre, who were on top of things and provided the great instruction they always do!
