Title: WACO TX JULY 16-17 AAR
Post by: KProctor on July 20, 2022, 12:26:19 AM
What a stupidly hot glorious weekend we had down in Waco, 16 shooters came out in triple degree weather and learned about life liberty and the ability to engage effectively at 400 yards. Saturday we worked through steady hold factors, positions, six steps of firing a shot, and our three strikes we were able to knock out 2 AQT's before closing out for the day. we had 2 Shooters on the line qualify with a healthy 221 score and one dude who just rocked it scoring 232 with a bolt action and irons...... that guy was dope Hope he reads this and takes a hat one day cause I need more of him in my life. Sunday unfortunately I was not present but, The rest of the instructor team was there and pulled off another successful shoot.  with 2 new rifleman 2 requalifications and 5 out of 8 insturctors getting the opportunity to requal  Id say this was a great shoot. I'd like to thank each any every shooter for braving through the weather and especially thank The instructors who really made this shoot awesome. Yall are the real MVP's post pictures if you got them

Hey, Kevin. It's "232 with a bolt action and irons" guy here. I had a great time! As is typical of the Appleseed program, you and your cadre did an excellent job of training and educating myself, the four friends I brought along with me, and everyone else! I always learn something new and gain proficiency with each shoot I attend.

I did not manage to surpass my personal best score of a 236 this weekend. However I still consider myself as having improved tremendously, because I managed to shoot a Distinguished score twice this weekend, and Rifleman many more times. In the words of Travis Haley, "An amateur trains until he gets it right. A professional trains until he cannot get it wrong." It is better to be able to score Rifleman every time, than to score Distinguished only once.

You may eventually, some day, wear me down and get me to accept an orange hat. Between the Waco and College Station shoots I have done, I get asked every single time!

For those who are curious, the rifle I used is a Mossberg M44US. A WWII era training rifle. They are very beautifully made. But should you choose to purchase one, beware that the magazines are a problem with this rifle. Factory magazines are rare and expensive, the reproductions are mediocre, and all are prone to feeding issues. To be fair to the rifle though, I do have to run the bolt very hard on the rapid fire portions of the AQT to keep up with all the guys running semi-autos, which may be exacerbating the problem. The other issue with the magazines is that they only have a seven-round capacity, which necessitates an otherwise unneeded reload on the standing portion of the AQT. You've gotta be quick! I am looking into converting this rifle to accept a more reliable magazine. Once that happens, a 250 AQT is inevitable.
