Title: GI Sling on AR rifles
Post by: 57plymouth on July 02, 2022, 10:21:49 AM
I've got some generic cheap slings on my AR rifles.  Has anyone swapped over to GI slings on their AR after taking the Appleseed instruction?  How well do they work on Magpul stocks?

Every AR I bring to AS has a USGI Cotton Sling on it.  As far as Magpul, I'll run either a QD swivel on the buttstock when I need to connect it, or I may even use a ziptie loop (close enough).  Depends on the stock installed.

THAT SAID:  For any other application, I'll run either a one-point or a two-point sling (not USGI, normally Vickers Blue Force).  Had a VERY bad experience trying to use a USGI during another, more tactically-oriented rifle course; ditched it after second string of fire.  That's just not what they're made for.

YMMV.

I'll second Monkey's comments.  If you're shooting for marksmanship, the G.I. cotton or 1907 leather slings are the way to go and cotton is cheaper and easier to use.
But if you're taking a carbine class that requires shooting in closer quarters, while moving, transitions, etc, the Vickers or similar are made for that.

Viking Tactics , padded sling with quick adjust  rigged as a two point sling for tactical work.
Viking Tactics , non padded sling with quick adjust rigged as a loop sling with a hook and a QD sling attach so I can add the loop sling as needed.

I've been using an Armageddon Gear sling for both run n' gun and KDs. Pretty versatile. Can be used as a carry sling and also a loop sling. For run n' guns I carry in front hanging down for quick access. Or throw the rifle over my back if I'm crawling through culverts and stuff.

The owner supports us here in Texas too.

Vid about using as a loop sling on link above.

Cool short vid about the company. Kinda funny starting at the 1 minute mark:

If there is interest I'll see if we can get an instructor discount.

Interesting sling. It seems to do everything but hasty, but it probably does that, too, somehow.

I'll second the vote for Armageddon Gear's Precision Rifle Sling.  It's not cheap, but it's fantastic.  Most of my rifles have GI Web slings, and everything else has the Armageddon Gear precision.

For hasty, I just use the arm cuff.  It's fast to get into.  I understand that this isn't technically a hasty position but it still offers stability.  You can also snug down the sling and allow the bungee section to pull the rifle into the body.

I run GI slings on my more target AR rifles.  I need to get a tacticacool sling for the pistols to aid i carrying them and stabilize them.

That'll work too. Myself I pull the 'tab' to shorten the sling and use it just like I would on a GI Sling.

Also I'd emailed Armageddon asking about an instructor discount. There is now a 15% discount. I'll post on the Instructor Purchase Program board about discounts.

All:
I'm trying to use the Armageddon Gear PRS but can't figure out how to set it up to equal the stability of a GI sling when looped up.  It seems like the tension on the loop is controlled by the support hand pushing the rifle forward; I can't get it to "tighten" like the GI sling. Am I doing something wrong?  Watched the AG videos multiple time and think I have it set up correctly; it just isn't as good as the GI sling for Appleseed use.  I'm thinking I'll have two slings for this rifle.
Thanks for any help/tips you might have.

I kinda did this one for multipurpose use.

QD and cotton sling all day long. QD attachment in the rear center is ideal or ambidextrous attachments for left and right side makes it easy if others need a loaner.

The A2 stock fits me really well, and if I planned to combine the GI sling with the A2 stock, I would probably use this company's products for mounting it: https://knsprecisioninc.com/rear-sling-mount/. Maybe in conjunction with one of these https://grovtec.com/products/push-button-base-to-stud-adaptor so I don't have to redo the sling's rear hardware from the QD swivels that I usually put on them. (As is, I'm currently trying to learn how to work a 1907 on my A2-stocked rifle - it disassembles easy enough that the fixed swivels suffice.) For putting a QD on either style of USGI stock for the AR, this product works well: https://grovtec.com/products/lr-ar-buttstock-push-button-base.

The A2 stock fits me really well, but not everyone fits such a long LOP (and I've seen one student who would've done well with an even longer LOP!) so I figure my loaner rifle ought to have a collapsible stock. But, when fully extended, most such stocks leave nothing but a bit of buffer-tube to put your cheek on - it's not very stable and definitely doesn't encourage correct NTCH turkey-neck. So, my loaner wears a Magpul UBR. It's got the QD sockets on either side, so swapping out the J-hook for a compatible swivel is simple enough. It's just a tad annoying how that stock's bottom-dead-center hardware is a fixed "footman's loop" for which no quick-detach is possible.

iirc, that KNS Precision product doesn't fit the USGI M4-carbine collapsible stocks, so even if I wanted to use one (e.g. I expect lots of short-armed students for some reason) I've no clue how I would produce rear quick-detach functionality there. Just like on the A2 stock, that plastic swivel is too thick for the Garand J-hook but too thin to stop a Magpul "paraclip" from yawing around and damaging the swivel.

On my one Magpul stock I had to buy a 'QD conversion connector' since the stupid stock didn't have that. It kinda looked like a QD but it wasn't. Then added a QD to the GI Sling. See this if your Magpul doesn't have a QD:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AEM35JM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I run just Hogue stocks on my ARs now. Already has a QD and is really good for getting a cheek weld.

Run n' guns - I love the Armageddon sling. It can be rigged as a quick and dirty loop sling too and is great for all sorts of carry in the woods. I've been using it for several years now at Appleseed KDs too. While not as good as a GI setup for a loop it's pretty dang close and much more versatile. Check out the youtube vids on using it as a loop.

I've had similar symptoms with mine, and at long last I think I found the problem and a solution!

The problem: There is no webbing which applies friction to the cinch point to prevent any momentary slack from being taken up from the front into the loop and instantly uncinching it. This is analogous to what happens if you disassemble the USGI sling, reassemble it with only the rear swivel captured to the H-buckle (and not the second point of contact between the webbing and the H-buckle to form the "center") then the rest of the sling going to the front, and then try to make the loop out of the same segment that captures the rear swivel.

(Genuine kudos to a nameless instructor who, months ago, was loaning out USGI slings configured as described above. My mental gears would never have started grinding to produce this here forum-post, if I had not seen and handled a thusly-misconfigured sling personally.)

A solution: The "release loop" can be repurposed for frictioning. Simply tuck it into the center of the swivel from which the front of the sling emerges. You should then find that the loop will stay on your arm even without maintaining pressure on the front of the rifle.

This is not described in the any of the company's instructions, and it has the downside that the "release loop" will no longer be usable to quickly release the loop - instead you'll need to pull at the hardware, much like with a GI sling.
