I recently picked up a barely used Rossi 22WMR rifle. Just like half my other rifles, I really didn't "need" it, but hated to pass it up. My question for those that have 22WMRs is what do you use yours for? I can't shoot RKD with it and the ammo is too expensive to use for 25 meter events. Just trying to decide what would be a good use and a good setup. It will need an optic; it has a rail but no sights.
I've qualified at 25 with my Ruger American Rimfire in 22wmr, for fun. But for practical use.... coyotes. Assorted varmints.
Great pest control or small varmint round. Rabbit, squirrel, yotes if you have smaller ones. I just built an AR in the round and it is nice. Need to get it sighted in still
MAHA
Helps fill the gap between .22 lr and .223 on the farm. There is always some varmint that needs shooting beyond 75 yards, so I use the .22 magnum.
Kind of like my 17 hmr. I love to shoot it at the range, but other than small varmints it is just a fun thing.
With $21 a box it is an occasional shoot.
Just spotted this. Shot my first Rifleman with a CZ 452 FS in .22WMR running CCI TMJ 40 grain. I ran out of rifles for the family, and it was what I had on hand that weekend. It is stupid accurate with almost everything but the most accurate round I have found is the Remington 33 grain boat tail Polymer tip. Claimed velocity is just under 2000FPS. For groundhog it is great medicine for DRT (Dead Right There) .22WMR had a reputation for poor accuracy but the newer ammo has cured that for me. Sub MOA is possible. The Remington round has been hard to find but my online ammo sources have it in quantity this month.
When a turkey will not come in to a call, you can reach out and touch them instead. It is an improved .22, so there is no use for it target shooting as a .22LR will do everything you need. Similarly, the .22 Long is effectively dead due to the ubiquity of the .22LR. Many folks do not "get" traditional hunting cartridges if they come from a purely military surplus or target shooting sports environment, but, for medium game, you want a cartridge that will do the job, but not destroy the animal.
A .22LR is unreliable on a turkey. A 30-06 will do the job, if you happen to be deer hunting during a combined season and see a turkey you want, but you have to headshot it to not destroy it. A .22WMR will do it nicely, if, for some reason, a 12 gauge won't fit the bill.
So, turkeys, coyotes, dogs, armadillos, smaller wild pigs (multiple shots for larger ones), ducks, turtles, opossums, raccoons, skunks, beaver, otter, snakes if you can hit one, and I'm sure there's others.
