Title: Winchester 131
Post by: SgtKilrain on June 15, 2022, 10:23:41 AM
Hey y'all, I have my father's old Winchester 131 that I learned to shoot on and I wanted to check what success anyone has had with adding the Liberty Training Rifle sights to that platform?

If you can, please show a couple of pictures of the rifle. Specifically, the front sight and top of the receiver.  Does the rifle have a front sight that is dovetailed into the barrel, or is it screwed on? Does the rifle have a grooved receiver or is it drilled and tapped for some kind of scope mount?

I'm thinking most rifles can be made into LTRs if you use a bit of imagination and do a bit of research. One word of advice on the rear sight: try to get it as far back (closer to your eye) as possible. Peep rear sights are at their best if they're close to the shooter's eye.  A peep that is too far away from the eye becomes problematic for the shooter.

I have made LTRs out of a couple of non-standard rifle platforms and they work great! One is a Remingtom 572A .22 LR Pump action. The other is a Savage Model 23 in .25-20, a bolt action. Set up as LTR's they each have a good deal of sight radius and that makes precise aiming pretty simple. On the Remington I used a Ruger 10/22 front (Tech) sight and the rear is a Marlin 795 Tech sight.  The front sight slid right into the dovetail and the rear clamps onto the grooved receiver.  The Savage has a Ruger 10/22 Tech sight for the front and a Thompson Center muzzleloader rear peep that screwed into an existing hole. Only one screw, but I also epoxied the base of the sight onto the top of the receiver.  Both rifles shoot as good as you can hold them. Of course both are equipped with GI cotton slings.

Do a search on Tech Sight's website.  Take a long look at all the front and rear sights they offer and see if something will work with your rifle. They're great people to work with and they ship quickly. Also, Ebay is a good source to peruse for used gun parts and you may find the sights there as well.

Good Luck with your project!
