We were hosted graciously by the Kenmore Shooting Range in Kenmore WA. Being indoors was wonderful since it got a bit wet in the area on Saturday. We were joined by 19 cadets, 4 senior members of CAP, and 6 total instructors, including a visiting Shoot Boss from Idaho who made the drive to help keep the event running due to the existing Shoot Boss having a last minute conflict on Sunday. We started the day with the cadets mostly shooting hand sized groups, but by mid afternoon Saturday we were mostly looking at quarter sized groups from everyone. What an amazing improvement!
The additional informational show & tell block regarding historical firearms was a hit with the cadets, with everything from a flintlock rifle similar to ones used during the revolutionary war period, all the way to the M14.
It is always our pleasure to be working with a group like the Civil Air Patrol, the cadets are a group of amazing youth and the senior staff are a pleasure to work with. Thank you everyone from the 3 CAP squadrons who participated, thank you members of the Kenmore Range leadership who were our hosts, and thank you to my fellow volunteers who came out to assist with running another successful and safe event!
bump :)
Sounds like an awesome event....I just had a CAP marksmanship event on April 9 in Middletown, OH. We had 15 CAP member participants and it was a great success with all enthused to do more with marksmanship. I am hoping that we can advance the partnership between CAP and Project Appleseed through future markmanship events here in OH. Was your event a 1/2 day Appleseed format combined with NRA instruction and targets so the cadets could earn an NRA marksmanship medal for their Blues?
Typically with CAP, we teach them the how of marksmanship and the history, and they apply that "how" onto the NRA qualification for their uniforms. In order to run this event, you need a NRA Rifle Instructor because that person scores the NRA targets (4 position qualification or rimfire qualification) and handles ordering the appropriate medals for the cadets. The cadets can bring their own personal rifles from home, otherwise you'll need to source a bunch of loaners to support it since CAP bylaws prohibit them from owning rifles. If you have time, you can have the cadets do AQTs to see if any score Rifleman as well. We've worked with various CAP squadrons around the state for a few years now, each time the cadets were just wonderful to work with.
