Title: A Good One to Fly With: Alaska Airlines Flights and Ammunition
Post by: Gus on April 17, 2022, 12:49:03 PM
Just wanted to pass on some recent experience of flying with ammunition in my baggage.  A month ago, my wife and I took a flight to San Antonio, from Anchorage (via Seattle) on Alaska Airlines.  As far as airlines go, Alaska Airlines is one of the friendlier airlines where ammo is concerned.

Without any fuss or hassles at all, we were each able to bring up to 50 lbs of ammo in our checked bags. Now we didn't go over the 50 lb total bag weight limit, so in each bag we had 38 lbs of .22 LR.

What does 38 lbs of .22 LR look like?  100 round packs of CCI SV or Mini mag weigh ~15 oz.  A 500 round brick of Aguila super extra weighs ~4.75 lbs.  So, it hashed out that one bag of luggage had 8 bricks of Aguila and the other had 40 packs of CCI.

Keep your ammo in the original packaging and then secure it all in a couple of good, sturdy cardboard boxes-securely taped.  You do not want packs of .22 LR rattling around in your luggage. We all know how way too many baggage handlers mistreat luggage as they load/unload a plane.

Upon check in you have to tell the baggage agent that you have ammo in your bags. They'll ask if it is still in its original packaging or in packaging meant for ammunition. All our .22 LR ammo made it to Texas in good shape.

Anyway, Alaska Airlines is good about ammo quantity and flying it in your baggage.  If you're coming up to Alaska, keep AK Airlines in your thoughts for travel plans. For those of us who live up here, we pretty much all fly with Alaska Air when we head down to the Lower 48.

In Liberty,

Gus

Just gotta ask - is CCI a lot cheaper in Alaska or something?

Not really. If you can find some it's $9-$12 per 100 now.

I bought most of mine "during the good old days " of 2019.
