Title: Canton, Georgia - Pistol Clinic - AAR - March 20th
Post by: Roswell on March 23, 2022, 11:38:42 AM
Sunday's Pistol Clinic at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office kicked off right on time with 4 eager Patriots. Big thank you to the always hospitable host, CCSO and Sheriff Frank Reynolds. After the welcome, we got right down to business with the 1st Strike of the Match as told by Captain John Parker.

Then we went over safety before leaving the classroom and heading to the range. The first instruction was simple pistol terminology and then some 1 on 1 Pistol familiarization. Then it was time for the first target of the day, the Hits Count! Alex cleared the target and won an Appleseed koozie! Huzzah sir!

With the first target out of the way we really dug into the material. We went over Grip, Stance, Had an eye dominance drill. Then we did some dry-fire practice as shooters were checked for stance and grip.

We did a demo of Drawing and firing for information purposes only, followed by a brief discussion of holsters and proper belts. Then we learned Close retention, pushing out from close retention and low ready. Then we did a dry fire exercise practicing Close retention, pushing out from close retention and low ready. Then, we learned the 6 Steps of Firing the Shot, Natural Point of Aim (NPOA) and trigger reset. We did another dry fire exercise with an emphasis on 6 Steps, NPOA and trigger reset. Finally, we brought everything together and went live.   :~

With some good data on the targets we learned about Talking Targets. Next, we went over mag changes. Then we practiced them. Then we did it with time added.  >:D

We went over malfunctions and the 2 methods to clear them. Next, we did an exercise on Tap, Rack, Press with some dummy rounds. Then we did one on Rip, Reload, Rack, Press with crushed brass. Both exercises were well received and revealed a lot.

Having worked up an appetite we broke for lunch and the 2nd Strike of the Match. Cokeguy also read some from the diary of Lucy Hosmer, Abner Hosmer's wife that went along great with the 2nd Strike. We cleaned up and headed back out for more shooting.

We learned the difference between Double Taps and Controlled pairs and then spent a good amount of time working on controlled pairs and gradually increased the time. Having gotten a handle on that, we moved on to One Handed shooting and spent a good amount of time on that. Finally, we slowed things down and did some Slow Fire Shooting. Having earned a break, we went into the classroom for the Third Strike of the Match.

We got back to it and grinded out 4 PQTs.  ~~:) We finished off with another Hits Count target and headed back inside to end the day. We finished off with The Onion of Self Defense. Followed by an impromptu demonstration on cane fighting from Cokeguy. And lastly, we heard about Samuel Whitemore, before cleaning up and heading home.

Apologies, apparently I was so busy that I only took one picture. Fortunately though I got everyone in it, albeit their backs.  :slap:

Thank you to the shooters and Instructors alike that came out. Shooters, keep up the practice and come back (with more friends  ;) ), I'll have those patches waiting on you. You all have what it takes and I hope to see each of you again on the line in the future.

In Liberty,
Roswell

P.S. - If anyone else got pictures, please feel free to share.

My thanks to Ross, Leadslinger, and Cokeguy for a great day of instruction, and to my fellow shooters for the good comradery. I know I learned a bunch, now to put it into practice.  I'll be back to earn my patch.

I did get a few pictures. I have no idea why they posted in landscape. They don't look like that on my iPad.

My congratulations to Roswell and Leadslinger for conducting an excellent Pistol clinic!
It was very helpful to receive instruction from Roswell on what he learned at the TN clinic run by Malabar that I was not able to attend due to Covid.
Having attended a number of other pistol clinics, and qualified at them, I found this one to be  most helpful in covering the ever-evolving protocols for pistol.
Again, thanks to Roswell for sharing your pistol knowledge...not qualifying this time was my fault, certainly not yours.
