Saturday started a little cool with the promise of warmth later. After getting checked in, we learned our safety material and engaged our first red coat of the weekend. We then learned about the tripod of rifle marksmanship: The Six Steps of Firing the Shot, Steady Shooting Position (prone), and Natural Point of Aim. We then shot lots of squares targets while getting plenty of one-on-one help from the various instructors. Next we covered Talking Targets, the First Strike of the Match (during lunch), and Inches Minutes and Clicks.
We shot more squares before taking an afternoon break to hear the Second Strike of the Match. More squares ensued before learning the various seated positions. We then took another break to hear the Third Strike of the Match before learning how to shoot in the standing position. We ended the day with Patrick Henry's speech.
Sunday began much the same as the previous day, with 5 of the 8 shooters returning for more instruction. We reviewed everything from Saturday, and then engaged our second red coat of the weekend. We followed this with one sighter square and our first AQT of the weekend. After practicing finding our NPOA and practicing mag changes, we ate our lunch while hearing various Dangerous Old Men stories.
After lunch we shot another AQT and then did another mag change drill before learning about the Rifleman's Bubble and the Rifleman's Dance. We took a short afternoon break to hear a story about Elizabeth Zane before shooting two more AQTs. These yielded a 220 for Eliana and a 213 for Chet! Congrats to you both!
We then shot the third and final red coat of the weekend. After that we learned about shooting Known Distance before trying it out for ourselves. We then wrapped up the day shooting steel targets at 100 yards.
Fun was had by all and the instructors saw lots of improvement for everyone. Keep practicing the skills we taught you this weekend and I am confident that a rifleman's score is within reach of all of you.
Here are some pics from Sunday afternoon...
Sounds like a great event! Good job everyone!
Congratulations Chet and Eliana!
It was my honor to work with these Appleseeders!!! Wish I could have worked Sunday to see Eliana and Chet receive their patches. To those who did not shoot expert, remember that a Rifleman persists. Hope to see you again at the next Appleseed shoot.
