The article by a former Recon Marine is about like what is taught at Appleseed IBC, with the addition of adding moleskin for comfort and cutting up his sleeping pad for firm foam.  I found it interesting that this technique was used in combat for this man's M110 SASS

Was shown this at our first Apple Seed with my kids and their M&P 15-22's. They didn't do the mole skin trick at the end though. That's genius

Foam pipe insulation and vet wrap are what we use in Iowa. Easily cut and you can use multiple layers if needed. It can be easily applied during a prep period. Almost all 10/22 that have scopes need the comb height increased.

I've used pool noodles.I believe they are a bit thicker and are only a buck or two each.

Maha up in Albuquerque bought a really thick yoga mat, and cut it into 1" wide by 4 or 5" long strips. You get a ton of them from a $15 mat, and it works GREAT. Bonus, it doesn't add to the width of the stock. Only the height. Then vetwrap, which I buy by the case.

Actually, as long as it's not adjustable it is legal for CMP. Put on with vet wrap is considered non-adjustable. Put on with Velcro is considered adjustable. (At least for Rimfire Sporter.)
