Does anyone have first hand knowledge of this scope and the linkable range finder? Reviews are hit and miss. I have seen some really good videos with people using it. I would like some input from the Appleseed family though.
Thanks,
Chuck
That looks like a digital optic. Digital has several benefits such as switching day/night cut filter; looks like it uses an IR Illuminator to provide night vision.
I've never used one, but could be a neat hunting scope if your into the bells & whistles that is provides over a traditional FFP or SFP scope.
I've got one of the digital monoculars. It's a Burris Equinox. It works very well. Images are pretty good - almost as good as a true gen 3. Of course IR is a must even on nights with lots of moon light. With standard NV, not the digital kind, you only need IR on the darkest of nights.
Here's the thing I didn't like about it: It uses an LCD screen to display the images. And that dang screen is so bright, even at the lowest setting, that it feels like my eyeball is burning. And your vision is screwed for a long time after that. I'd thought that maybe that was because it was an older version - about 4 years old - but that's not the case. I'd talked to a friend who has an ATN and he said that his was the same - LCD way too bright. I don't know which version his is though but it's a fairly recent model. Maybe two years old or less.
But they do work. And if you don't have close to 3K to drop for good NV then it is a good option.
Maybe they are better now? I'd think that maybe a software update would help. Hopefully some more instructors will give some more feedback. I was thinking about getting one of the ATNs myself. Lots of hogs here in Texas and farmers let you hunt for free in lots of places.
Heck - another stimulus and I might be tempted to get a PVS-14. And if you've got the money PVS-14 is the way to go. There are attachments that allow it to be mounted on a rifle behind an optic. And don't skimp buying a gen 2 - save a bit more and get gen 3.
I'd avoid Optics Planet.
They have a horrible reputation of pretending stuff is in stock, charging your card then sending a notice that the item is not in stock but will be soon and then dragging on for months until they actually order the merchandise.
It's a dirty way of running a business where they take orders and charge for them but wait until enough orders are placed to meet whatever threshold they need for a good price from the manufacturer THEN finally order it from the manufacturer and get it in to their warehouse some time later to ship to you.
If you're OK with paying up front and maybe waiting months go for it but be ready.
Thank you all for the input.
Scuzzy have you tried putting a dark lens to tone down the LCD? Having to darken your night vision.ðŸ˜,
The optics planet link was just convenient.
