Title: Feb 28/March 1 Santa Barbara Appleseed
Post by: rock-chucker on March 02, 2009, 02:24:26 AM
Well, just got home from the Santa Barbara shoot.

Not as big of a turnout as I had hoped, but definitely a quality turnout.  We started with 7 shooters on Saturday, and finished up with 4 today.  these four really toughed it out today, persisted, and one of them posted a 210 on his last AQT of the day!  Good going, Dave!  I'm especially tickled about this, as Dave was the first person I have had the honor of handing a Rifleman patch as Shoot Boss.

Dave's Father-in-Law, Rich is knocking hard with a high score of 202, and Curt right behind in the 190s.  Excellent progress was made by Rachel, also.  Another new shooter Tina showed persistence by attending as much of both days as she could.  In addition to that, she raised the Appleseed fashion bar about 10 clicks by donning high heels on Saturday!.  I had two good friends make it out Saturday (thanks for coming, Zeev and Viv).  All of this weekend's shooters plan to return for the April 18/19 event.

Thank you all for coming.  You were all a real pleasure to work with!

On the RWVA side of things, Mr Bill made "red hat", Desert Dog completed his IIT III PCs, and Jaques made his debut as IIT fresh out of last week's Piru Appleseed.  Congratulations on your progress, guys; and thanks for making my job easier with your excellent work.

Thanks also to the Winchester Canyon gun club for hosting this event.  This is still the most beautiful location I've been to for a shoot.  On the way out from the range, Desert Dog, Mr Bill and I just had to pull over to admire the view from above Santa Barbara, looking out over the ocean and Channel Islands.  Spectacular.

I know that the April 19th event will be even bigger and better than this one.

See you all on the trail.

A great event indeed.  I wanted Curt, the guy who never shot a rifle before, to get his 210 so bad I could taste it!!  He was knocking at he door and will get it.  I can't imagine a better way to spend a weekend than Appleseeding! I even got to put the first round of my newly built AR downrnge on the last Redcoat of the weekend.

Great times with great people.

Pixs, anyone??!!
Don't tell me you guys went out to one of -the- nicest ranges in Cali without any way of recording it??

And a hearty congratulations to those who showed the inner mettle, & focus to accomplish the 2nd step of their journey, capturing a Rifleman patch!! Well done! O0
And those who were close, just a "little" more work is needed before you join that group as well.......keep practicing, and we will see you at the next shoot! <:) :~ :~

Pictures, please!! :D

Curt here... and honestly I am more sad about letting Desert Dog down than I am about not actually making rifleman.
Thanks again for such awesome instruction and making it a great weekend.

But there will be another time soon enough for me to make you guys proud.
Speaking of which DD, could you email me the links for cheap, starting out with a .22  and also what was it exactly that I used.
thanks.

hey Curt, I mean Spidey.

Glad to see you on the forum.  Especially glad you came out to the shoot.  Was truly a pleasure getting to know you and working with you.

Excellent work, by the way.  By Sunday afternoon, I don't think there would be any person in the shooting world who would have guessed you fired your first shot only the day before!

Glad you're in the market for a rifle of your own.  I'll let DD fill you in on the details of his rifle he loaned you.  if you need more info ever about rifles, you can check with us back here and/or PM any of us to talk rifles.  that's sort of what we do.... ;)

the first thing to know about rifles is...YOU CANNOT HAVE TOO MANY!   >:D O0

there is a relatively new addition to the list of good training rifles.  Our "standby" rifle (the one you used) is what we call the "Liberty Training Rifle", which is based on the Ruger 10-22, with the sights changed out with units from a company called Tech Sights, the addition of sling swivels, and a better magazine release.  That's pretty much (I think) what you were using.  they run about 220 bucks from Big 5, plus the sights, swivels, etc.  It has recently come to our attention that Marlin makes a really good rifle for marksmanship training.  It is the model 795.  Tech Sights now makes sights for these, and they come from the factory with sling swivel studs installed and have a good magazine release you don't need to upgrade.  They also have a great reputation for accuracy.  to top it all off, supposedly these things retail at under 200 bucks.  You might want to take a look at that model.  One the other hand, you really can't go wrong with a Ruger 10-22, either.  We have trained many, many, many riflemen using LTR-ised 10-22s.

Again, welcome to the board, and congratulations on a terrific showing last weekend.  you coming back in April?

You didn't let me down at all!  You made me proud.  I've sent youa PM for the rifle you used.  The Marlin 795 is defintely a good option.

Where are the pics Mr. Bill?

A few pictures coming up - a little delayed.

What a range.  Look backward and see the Ocean in the distance.  Look around and you have the green hillsides strewn with boulders.

Another great 'Seed in the most beautiful shootin' range I've been to.  It threatened to rain Sunday but after just a few drops decided to clear up by the time the AQT grind began.

It was great seeing all of the 'Seeders and was especially rewarding helping two people completely new to shooting.  Although they were new to shooting, however they already were pretty aware citizens.

Congrats to our Rifleman, and well done to those on the path to becoming Riflemen.

Cheers

MrBill

This is just a little down the road (~1/2 mile) from the range.

And here are pictures of our Rifleman Dave, and Dave with a little water from under the North Bridge to help him along with his 210 score!

Yeah, I ran into Dave last Saturday. I headed up to the 'Glass Factory' up on the mountain there where a Calguns shoot was going on. He was there. There was also about 30-40 calgunners. I passed out fliers for April 18-19 and talked to a bunch of them (I already know many), and a lot of them seemed pretty interested. Then I went over to Winchester Canyon Gun club, talked to some of the shooters there, passed out fliers and made sure Dusty (RO) had plenty to hand out Saturday and Sunday.

I went over to the shotgun range and there were a bunch of UCSB students waiting to use the loaner shotguns there. The guy that brings these students up there has told me, generally, these students do not own rifles. I have told him I will have 2-3 loaners for April 18-19, but not sure how many more loaners will be available. He seems to think he could put a UCSB student behind each loaner that is available. Just don't know how many there will be.

Our friend Arion has flyers at all the local gunshops right now. I have passed out a lot of flyers this past week.

How do we find out how many people have signed up?

Go up to the "Appleseed Schedule" board on the forum, then click the Appleseed Event Info, then the first thread should be Pre-registration #s.

Oh, and by the way, good job!  O0

I just logged in and wanted to let all the instructors at sb appleseed know how honored we all are to have had the opportunity to be instructed by such fine group of americans. I thought shooting from a bench or prone I was a decent shooter ha ha. Project appleseed blew me out of the water what was passed on to me in only 2 days of instruction by Rock chucker, Desert Dog,Hollywood Marine,And Mr. Bill Has been life changing. Now I have the skills to consistently put out some nice groups.
I also really enjoyed the historical accounts and relearning why we have our freedom. On my last aqt I shot 210 and i cannot wait to improve my score April 19 and accept my instuctor hat. If you are an american who loves your country enough to want to defend it you should appleseeed.
Maximum respect to all the instructors and shoot bosses your time = changed lives Thanks      Goodland Dave
