Title: Newark AAR Oct 3&4, 2020
Post by: Corvette on October 05, 2020, 01:42:43 PM
Wow, what a great Appleseed at Dillon Sportsman Center near Newark, OH this past weekend.  We had 21 shooters arrive Saturday morning ready to work on their marksmanship skills.  And what a great group of shooters we had.

We started the weekend with a welcome, an introduction to the goals of RWVA and Project Appleseed, and a safety briefing.
This was followed by bringing rifles to the line and we started the event with the Sat morning Red Coat.

Results were impressive.  We had14 shooters put three rounds in the 100 yd target, 6 at 200, 6 at 300, 2 at 400 and 4 joined Daniel Morgan riflemen.  Nobody cleared this Red Coat but the results were encouraging.

We moved to the points of instruction (POIs).  The steady hold factors in prone were presented by Cactus Jack followed by the six steps and NPOA.  Drills were shot after each POI and we then moved to shooting groups for sight adjustments.

The First Strike was presented at lunch followed by an IMC presentation.  We returned to the line, sight adjustments were made and confirmation groups were shot.  This was followed by a second sight session to get everybody "dialed in".

We then moved to the steady hold factors in seated followed by several drills.  This was followed by the steady hold factors in Standing and related drills.  We moved to the Sat afternoon Red Coat.

Results were strong.  We had 20 of 21 at 100, 13 of 21 at 200, 9 of 21 at 300 and 5 of 21 at 400.  We had 6 folks join Daniel Morgan and we had three cleared Red Coats.  Huzzah!!!!  Congrats to Andrew, Jay and John.  The day ended with a combined second and third strike presentation with a call to action by Corvette.

Sunday dawned sunny and pleasant and all the shooters returned for day two.  The Sunday morning Red Coat showed good results.  We had 18 of 21 at 100, 11 at 200, 8 at 300, 2 at 400, 2 joined Daniel Morgan.

One of our instructors, Cactus Jack, came up with a song to commemorate the Red Coat.  Using the framework of the song "I shot the sheriff" he came up with alternate lyrics of "I shot the shingle, and cleared a Red Coat at an Appleseed".   This created a chuckle across the line.

After we completed an NPOA drill on a squares target, we moved to the AQT grind.  We completed two AQT's before lunch on Sunday and there were a number of people who were on the porch or knocking on the door but we didn't get anyone over the mark.

We broke for lunch where we presented a KD briefing and we returned to the line.

Two more AQTs were shot and we finally had some folks cross the line to Rifleman.
Cary requalified with 219, Brad requalified with a 223 and Ray joined the family of Ohio Riflemen with a score of 223.

We then shot the Sunday afternoon Red Coat. Results were strong and consistent with the morning Red Coat.   We had 15 of 20 at 100, 14 at 200, 5 at 300, 3 at 400 and 9 joined Daniel Morgan.  We had one clear the Red Coat.  Congrats Slim.

We closed the event with a final call to action for the shooters.

My deep thanks to all the shooters for having a safe and fun event and to the Instructors (Schottzy, DblSchottzy, Camo Cowboy, Chevy Shooter, and Cactus Jack) who helped with the event.   Also, my thanks to the Dillon Sportsman Center for hosting us again.  Huzzah!!! I hope to see all of you at a future Ohio event.  Remember that a Rifleman persists, never gives up and recognizes that a Rifleman's skills are not easily attained.  See you all soon.

I had a great time at my first appleseed, learned a lot, (shot the first redcoat on my knees with no idea what to do,) and I am many times a better shooter than when I arrived. Many thanks again to our great instructors, I will be back for sure, hopefully earning a patch.
