Title: Tech-sights, windage just not quite 100%.
Post by: McM1900 on February 17, 2009, 09:50:44 PM
So I was at the range today sighting in my LTR (10/22 w/ Tech-sights TSR-200) at what I assume was 25 yards.  The shots were all landing right of POA.   Over 3 5 shot groups I 'walked it in' from 2.5 inches right all the way to .75 inches left using the windage adjustment w/ detent.  The next two groups of 5 were both .50-.75 left.

At this point, should I try using the 'graduated windage scale' on the rear of the sights?  If so, what is the MOA adjustment for this part?

Thanks.

If you'll understand that I'm a neophyte with a rifle, let me ask why you wouldn't try to move the front sight and reset it?  I understand that you'd have to reshoot to make sure you got your windage zero, but ...

I'm not sure I understand what is wrong.  If your adjustment moved it too far to the left go back the other way on the rear sight windage adjustment knob.  I don't have my 10/22 where I can get at it and my Tech Sight instructions are in the case with the rifle.  The instructions will tell you how many clicks it takes to move the POA and inch on the target.

If you counted the clicks you moved the sight while moving the group 3.0 to 3.25" across the paper just divide the number of clicks by the distance moved and you'll have the distance per click.  Then turn the rear sight windage adjustment knob that many clicks back to move your group to the POA.

The graduations look nice but I'm not sure they are worth much.  If you want to be sure you can re center your groups in case someone ever messes with your rifle sights:
1.  Once it is sighted in look at the rear sight to determine which side of the assembly the aperature is closest to
2.  Begin turning the adjustment knob to move the aperature to that side while COUNTING the clicks.
3.  Once it runs out of adjustment room, move it back to the starting point the same number of clicks and shoot another group.
4.  If the group moved back to your POA write down the number of clicks and keep it on the rifle (like a piece of tape on the "cheek" side of the butt stock.  That way if someone makes an adjustment for you if you lone the rifle out you can always look at your piece of tape, move the aperature over to that same side of the assembly and count your clicks back to YOUR rear sight setting.

Or, if your memory is better than mine, just remember how many clicks it is from the side to the sighted in point.

Have fun shooting your 10/22.

Absolutely ignore the graduations.   We teach Inches/Minutes/Clicks, not dashes and lines.... O0
For initial sight adjustment, your rear sight shuold be centered and you set your initial windage as close as you can with the front sight.  Once you are close, then you move the rear sight.  Each rear sight click will be less than 1/4" at 25M.  The amount varies based on barrel length.
What each person needs to do with their rifle once they are grouping shots fairly well is to move the rear sight adjustment and see for themselves how much it changes their point of impact. The same goes for the front sight.  The more intimate you are with your sights, the better you will become at using them and your rifle.

IIRC, each click on the TS-200 is 5/8" as opposed to the 1/4" for the TS-100 sight.  I could be wrong about that, tho.

The windage should be the same, but the elevation would be different than the front sight.
