Title: Kneeling Position - How to Master

This article from NRA was listed on a recent CMP news email. It mentions the kneeling roll which I use in CMP events, but I have never heard it mentioned in Appleseed instruction. There appear to be some differences also in the SHFs

BeSwift mentioned it at our event back in March. Personally, the kneeling or seated position is my least favorite, not because of the time constraints, but because I can never seem to get as solid as I feel like I should be. Usually I turn my foot to the side and sit on my heel in a modified kneel, but have started experimenting with the seated, legs-out tripod position. Something, something old dog new tricks...

This is a very excellent subject.
Many of the participants in the classes we hold in Chino Valley Az., have sitting or kneeling issues due to age and physical constraints.
I have been wondering for a while how to overcome this, PRS (Precision Rifle Series) offers an interesting perspective. PRS uses bags for long range shooting stability but we can use the bags for students with a challenge.
For the person challenged by age, physical limitations a bag at the achilles tendon region one foot, or a bag up front of the chest could open up the seated position.
A smaller bag could even be used in standing.
The bag should only be used to help overcome a challenge that cannot be overcome by practice, i took yoga to loosen up those muscle groups as an example.

Hmm - I still every now and then try different variations on seated. However I've never tried kneeling before. I'll give it a shot though. Kneeling vs seated would shave a few seconds off of getting into position. And besides - you learn something new every day. The article did say that 'the kneeling position can be almost as steady as the prone position.' I find that hard to swallow. But hey - it might just work.

What does the term 'kneeling roll' mean? It's not defined in the article. I not clear on that.

After my first Appleseed I had to do yoga type exercises to be able to get a good seated position. It took awhile. A few months to feel comfortable.

4.7.2 Kneeling Roll
One cylindrical roll, placed under the right foot or ankle of the right foot (left foot for a left- handed athlete), in the kneeling position is allowed. The roll cannot exceed a maximum of 25cm (10 in.) long and 18cm (7 in.) in diameter. The roll must be made of soft and flexible material. The use of binding or other devices to shape the roll is not permitted. The use of a kneeling roll is optional.
National three position air rifle 10 meter rules - CMP

From experience in slow fire of 20 rounds in kneeling position this roll not only improves stability but eases fatigue.  Sitting on the foot on the floor is also permitted in the kneeling position just as we teach in AS, but is not physically possible for some of us

...and is uncomfortable, if not painful, for most of us...

Because kneeling as a position is so useful for hunting I practice it a lot, but it hurts after about 20 seconds. Every now and then I will take a kneeling position when I shoot a practice AQT, mainly to see how it compares to my favorite, cross-legged sitting.  One of the above posts mentions that some of the pain can be lessened with stretching or other exercise. To that I'll add weight loss will also help.  I know that's my biggest problem and  one that I'm working on.  After I lost 30 lbs last year it became a whole lot easier to get into any of the sitting/kneeling positions, and, get back up from them and prone. This year I plan to lose another 20-30 lbs.

My son used a kneeling bag when he was shooting competitive air rifle in high school.  He says it makes a difference.
