Post by: Wade on February 15, 2009, 10:11:28 PM
With heavy wind from 6 to 12 and light Rain ,temp about 40 deg wind from 20 mph to 44 (gust's)  what if any affect would this have on shot group's? m-1 garand  greek m-2 ball 300 yards.

TIA

Well.....
I'd say since your wind is coming right up your back....the biggest thing to "worry" about is how many raindrops each bullet runs into.......
That's a straight down shear force to deal with, & no way of knowing in advance....

Variables....friggin' variables.....

Woof!

Wade,

Considering you know your 300 yard zero, high wind effects from 6 o'clock should be minimal on your projectile, but may have a bigger impact on position stability depending on your fundamentals.

Wade,

The only effect will be the wind and since it is coming straight up your back the effect will be minimal. Rain does not have an effect on bullets. I know, I know! It seems like it should but I have a lot of experience shooting in rain, some so heavy that it was almost impossible to see the target, and it never had an effect on bullet impact. Even 22 rimfire is not deflected by rain.  I shot a 22 RF offhand match at 100 yards in a rain so heavy that you couldn't see the target line with normal vision. I could barely make out my target with the 24 power scope on the rifle. I shot a perfect score with my normal sight settings.

Rain just makes you wet.

Rain does not effect the bullet at all. The supersonic wave around the bullet does not allow the rain drops to touch the bullet. I have shot many times at Perry with hundreds of other shooters and have seen this effect every time.

Now, if the wind is switching from 6 o'clock to 12 o'clock while you are shooting a string, I think that this can best be described as a tornado. Seek shelter fast. That is absolutely an extreme condition.
