Title: Loss Prevention Slings
Post by: HapHapablap on February 25, 2020, 01:55:08 AM
By my count I lost five loaner slings in 2019. I decided to make some "loss prevention" slings, the idea being that brightly colored ones would be easy to spot if someone accidentally walked off with one. The red also makes them sort of Appleseed themed.

Now I'm worried that they're really cool looking and are more of a target.  :wb:

Yeah, I actually like those.  So, they could "grow legs".

My pack of bubblegum pink and bumblebee yellow slings always get returned! **). The instructor who made them for me has left Appleseed, I wish someone else would make them!

If you want to make some of these try this.   Glendale Parade Supply has white slings for $10.25. Buy some RIT die and die them any color you want in a 5 gal bucket. I would recommend Hot Pink or something somebody wants to give back.

At their prices for the sling and the cost of the die this is about the same you would pay for a normal sling.

Have you used them?  Just curious if they are as reliable as the CJ Weapons OD M1 slings I usually buy.

I like the idea.

I have not myself however they were recommended by "Stoneknives" on the forum to me. He does use them. If I remember his opinion correctly they are not the absolute best sling on the market however they are good and for loaner slings they work very well.

Don't count on pink slings being less likely to walk.

Many years ago I was a general surgery resident at a time when there were very few female general surgery residents.  Scrub suit theft is a problem for most teaching hospitals because scrub suits are very convenient garments that are suitable for many different purposes.

So the university hospital surgery department decided to purchase a large number of scrub suits in - you guessed it - hot pink.  After all, no self-respecting surgery resident would be caught dead in a pink scrub suit, right?

Thefts went up.  The residents were stealing them right and left for their wives and girlfriends.

All my rifles have pink or yellow slings.  Just easy to pick out from the pile at the end of the day, quick look up/down the line before packup and you'll get a good idea which ones are yours.  I also have loaner kydex cheek rests that are in pink or orange, again for high visibility in a world of green/tan/black.  I always get a grin from the shooter when I loan one out, but I always get it back!

I'm interested in your manufacturing technique, if you care to share.

Sure!

Parts:
   Webbing (https://www.etsy.com/listing/48872929/cotton-webbing-125-inch-five-yards-your)
   J Hooks (https://www.ammogarand.com/m1gasljhore.html)
   Keepers (https://www.ammogarand.com/m1gaslkebure.html)
   Tips (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B007UJZWKW)
   Tri-Glides (https://www.ahh.biz/hardware/military/tri-glides/tri-glides_steel_32mm_milspec.php)

These are the best prices I could find for each part.

Instructions:

Cut 52" of webbing and then run a line of stitching across each end to prevent fraying. I'm using size 69 bonded nylon thread and a 110/18 needle.

Then sew in the tri-glide. The middle bar is sewn into a loop. I doubled it over 1 1/4" (the width of the webbing) and then left a 3/4" loop for the tri-glide:

Sew all three layers together with a Box X stitch. I had to add a walking foot to my machine to get through all three layers (my stitching is a little sloppy, but plenty strong):

Next step is just to assemble the sling with the J hook and keeper like you normally would:

Last step is to add a tip to the keeper end of the webbing. I pounded mine on with a mallet:

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Love the slings.  Nice!

I wrap everything I own and loan in PINK duct tape.  Including mags...

Easy to spot and rarely get walked off with.

My experience with colored cotton slings is that they get so dirty that they blend in and get harder to spot... so, PINK it is!!!

My solution is to have attendees sign out slings and keepers so I know who has them.
I like the look of those red slings though. I may make one for myself.
Thank you for sharing the links to the parts.
