Title: 25 Meter AQT with a Scope *Eye Relief*
Post by: USNAVYCHIEF(Ret) on September 04, 2019, 02:41:13 PM
First let me break down the AQT in percentages a bit:

50% of the shooting on the 25M AQT will be done in the prone position.

60% (150 out of 250 points) of the points are PRONE position points.

40% of the total possible score is the bottom row, SLOW PRONE

So....

It behooves one to set that rifle up for the PRONE position.

I use a fixed/non adjustable stock. This costs me a bit, as when I shoot seated and standing I get a bit of grey/black shading in the scope. But, this does not cost me any points because the grey/black shading is only present when shooting seated or standing and those targets are HUGE.

I have found that the ideal position for the rear eyepiece on a 10/22 is to have it just in line with the rear heel of the receiver, or 1/2" FWD of the rear heel of the receiver.

This should allow for an excellent prone position and a repeatable cheek weld.

I am not discounting any setup that has scored Rifleman with the scope rear of the heel of the receiver. It can be done and has been done countless times. But....

It is not "ideal".

Consider experimenting with scope position in the prone position.

Try this, shoot the bottom row prone targets with the scope rear of the receiver heel, and then move the scope FWD and see if your score gets any better.

For me it is all about score....and score comes with "repeatability". Repeatibility is key, especially in the prone position.

There are likely other scope mounts and bases that will work out there. What I have found that works phenomenal is:

- EGW 20 MOA base (this will also allow you to shoot a 200 yard rimfire KD event)
- Tactical Solutions extended one piece mount

Use whatever will work to get that rear eyepiece equal with the heel of the receiver or just a bit FWD of the rear heel.

I am 6ft tall, and my 10 yr old daughter is 5 ft tall. Both of us regularly score in the upper 240's on our AQTs with this setup.

It just works!

The scope mount I am referring to above is the Tactical Solutions Edge Scope mount.

You can read about it here:
https://www.tacticalsol.com/x-ring-s...ge-scope-mount

Sold out at Tactical Solutions, however it can be had on Amazon cheaper here:
https://www.amazon.com/Tactical-Solu.../dp/B00JQ488MS

The Scope Base is an EGW 20 MOA base:

Here it is on EGW's website:
http://www.egwguns.com/scope-mounts-...-ambidextrous/

Or you can purchase it on Amazon as well:
https://www.amazon.com/Ruger-10-22-P...g-goods&sr=1-1

The above combination, allows for a lot of flexibility as the mount base extends past the front of the receiver over an inch.

That base coupled with the extended mount definitely work well.

It is an ALMOST return to zero system. I have removed the scope and moved it FWD in the mount during a prep period at my last Appleseed event a few weeks ago...and realized less than 1MOA elevation and windage shift.

Picture of us in position. Stocks are different.....but cheek weld is pretty much the same.

Scopes are positioned the same as well.

She is wearing a coat, I am not.

This was a couple weeks ago at an Annapolis, MD 1 day Appleseed event.

For "repeatability", I shoot my MAGPUL X22 stock (and pretty much all stocks without a pistol grip) with a Nose To Thumb reference. Were I to show pics of me and the M1 Garand or 1903 Springfield, it is pretty much the same. This helps me to remain "Consistent" behind the rifle.
