Ok i am in the market for a shooting jacket, what size do i get? I usually wear a XL to a 2XL, would a 3XL work or 4XL? Thanks 1911Ron
I'm 6'0", 200 lbs. I usually wear an XL shirt/sweatshirt. Ordered a XXL Shooting Jacket from Fred and it fits perfect for me.
You'll want the jacket to fit snug. The whole purpose is to keep you and the rifle from sliding around. (You from sliding around on the mat, the sling from sliding around on the arm, and the rifle from sliding around on your shoulder) If the jacket is too big, you just slide around inside it. I'm 5'11" 185# and wear a Creedmore large. I usually just wear a long sleeve shirt under the jacket, but can wear a sweatshirt in a pinch.
Not sure if you're a HP competitor or CMP shooter, but one of the major benefits of attending the Matches at Camp Perry each year, is the chance to get "properly" fitted with a shooting jacket, prescription shooting glasses made while you're looking down your sights at the range, etc at vendors row. If you ever have the chance to go there, jump at it and bring you're credit card..
I normally wouldn't shill for a particular vendor, however, these folks fit me for my jacket, and I was in awe of their customer service and knowledge, checking things with the jacket while in shooting position(s), etc. They literally took 15-20 min to fit me properly. Maybe they could talk you thru it over the phone, as it's not always as straight forward as picking a size.

If you're normally an XL-XXL, buy a XXXL. It may be just a bit big in the summer, but it'll fit great in the cooler weather with a hoody on underneath.
Keep in mind, if you're buying a "field shooting" jacket, you're buying it to keep the sling on snug, a little padding in the shoulder, and some padding on the elbows. Dampening your heartbeat is something you shouldn't really concern yourself with if you're looking to spend less than $50. It's also something you shouldn't concern yourself with in regards to Appleseed as your heartbeat and all that other mumbo-jumbo the sub-MOA guys talk about is nowhere to be found at an Appleseed event. (It is out there however, so if you're making an "investment" in a jacket, do like BeSwift said above and get outfitted properly. However, if you're looking for a little extra padding/comfort (and to look really cool!) then pick up one of Fred's or bid on an old used one on E-Bay.)

I ordered one about 3 weeks ago, what's the usual turnaround time on these? I'm asking here, because I know some of you guys bought these from Fred and I was wondering how long it took to get yours. I think his website says to give it 30 days.
I've heard your average turnaround time on the shooting jackets from Fred's is dependent upon how many AS events he's scheduled to attend when you order. If you look at the Instructor Schedule and see he's not on any events, you could get it pretty quickly. If he's booked up, well, find the first weekend he's "off" and then add 30 days to that.
Or, you may get it in about four days.
It just all depends. It says right on his site that he's Appleseeding and that's his priority. Probably the best way to get one quickly is through "the secret Appleseed network." Find someone heading down to Ramseur, shoot them the money and then have them bring it back.
If that's not good enough, there's always E-Bay!

The smart way to get one from Fred is to have it shipped with Appleseed supplies that are coming your way, or headed to an event you'll be at.
Doesn't work for everybody, but it will work for some of you, like The Machine.
Shooters in the southwest will probably prefer a tan jacket to reflect some of the overabundance of sun. ;) O0
