Title: Ruger 10 22 out of the box accuracy?
Post by: robyinbird on August 23, 2019, 09:19:47 AM
Hi. My first Appleseed shoot last week. Buying my 22 soon.  Is the
Ruger 10 22 out of the box with no upgrades accurate enough for Appleseed?
Sorry if this is a dumb question but I'm new to firearms. Thanks.

A stock factory ruger 10/22 is accurate enough. However, the sighting system can be a challenge to use and is very difficult to adjust accurately in the field.
Tech sights or a scope make a very good upgrade. I'd suggest taking a look at the tc r22 (very similar to the ruger 1022, in fact 99% interchangeable including magazines). It has a lot of nice features built in to it.

Yes, the sights would be the most important thing to upgrade.  If you have excellent eyesight, which usually also implies youth, you may be able to use the stock Ruger 10/22 sights.  But even then, there is no provision for windage adjustment short of drifting the rear sight in its dovetail with a punch, hardly a practical thing to do on the firing line.  So if your windage is off, the only solution would be to hold off of the targets.

The rear sight can be adjusted for elevation by loosening two tiny, and easily lost screws, and sliding the "notch plate" up or down.  But there are no preset detents to allow for repeatable adjustments to be made so the process is quite hit or miss and awkward.

Precise enough, able to make sub 2 MOA groups, plenty.  Accurate enough, ability to put those groups where you want them, maybe.  As mentioned above the addition of Tech-sites for irons or a scope easily remedy this problem.

If you plan to mount a scope a cantaleaver rail from EGW or DIP is a great help in getting the scope far enough forward to get proper eye relief in prone.

Most 10/22s need to have sling studs added as well.  Things to look at when comparing different rifles.  Another consideration is the 10/22 carbine has a short length of pull.  Another easy fix but again another $20 or so and time.

Do you have a friend that can help you pick out a rifle that fits?  A little research and more up front may save you a lot of time money and frustration in the long run.

Let us know if we can help.

Along with Tech Sights or a scope I would replace the trigger group with the Ruger BX Trigger.

The BX trigger group is a great upgrade for the money.

I suggest doing the auto-bolt release before you put the BX trigger in.

Thanks for all the help.   How do I know if the rifle fits? I was going to order online but may need to rethink this.   The two I am looking at on PSA website are the Ruger 10/22 compact 31114- 16"barrel 34"length.  Or the Ruger 31115(Man's best friend) 18.5" barrel 37" overall length.  I was thinking the longer barrel might be a little more accurate but hadn't thought of how it would fit an average sized lady.  Bet you call tell I am new at this.   :slap:

Will definitely put on a scope and upgrade trigger group like you all are saying when I finally get the rifle.  REALLY appreciate the info.

The important measurement is length of pull.  This is the linear distance from the center of the butt stock plate to the center of the trigger shoe.  Most Ruger 10/22s have stocks that provide a LOP of 13.5" which my be a bit short for many adults.

There are a number of "rules of thumb" for determining the optimal LOP for your anatomy.  A common one is to bend you elbow to a 90 degree angle and crock the index finger on your shooting hand as if you were getting ready to squeeze the trigger.  Take a yard stick and measure the distance from the bottom of your upper arm at the crook of your elbow to your trigger finger.

There are other such rules of thumb.  But sometimes it takes experimentation to determine what LOP actually works for you.  I am finding that I do better with a LOP shorter than what would be recommended using the above-mentioned rule.

If the LOP on your 10/22 is too short, it can often be lengthened by adding a spacer or a recoil pad to the butt stock.  Or you can buy a stock for it that allows adjustment for LOP.

I would recommend trying the standard stock first.

I'd put the scope as a much more important upgrade than the trigger group.

To get the most out of the scope you'll need this extended rail to allow you to move the scope far enough forward to use comfortably at Appleseed.
https://www.brownells.com/optics-mounting/rings-mounts-amp-bases/rifle-bases/10-22-extended-picatinny-scope-mount-prod22345.aspx (https://www.brownells.com/optics-mounting/rings-mounts-amp-bases/rifle-bases/10-22-extended-picatinny-scope-mount-prod22345.aspx)

Along with it you'll want to use the lowest rings possible for your scope to likewise make it comfortable.

The recommended rail is very nice. EGW and others make a similar rail for le$$. Like the cost of a buck of ammo.

All four of my 10/22 have the stock trigger.  If you plan of graduating to a "stock" centerfire rifle the trigger is normally more than good enough.  I have never encountered the horror story 10/22 trigger of the interwebs.

If you are buying a rail anyway get the 20 MOA rail.  Rimfire at 25m gets boring after you master the fundamentals, at 100-200m brings back the challenge. ;D

Please don't fall down the "gear trap" until after you shoot score.  Keep it simple and focus on the software: build a good prone position, learn to quickly acquire NPOA and move it on target, use the 6 steps of firing a shot.  Then you will be able to pick up any rifle and master it and you will make the most use of the"upgrades."  Don't worry about what you don't understand in the last sentence that is what you will learn at the shoot.

Remember to bring a teachable attitude.

If you a want contact the Shootboss about a loaner rifle to learn what you need / want in a rifle before you buy or ask to meet with some one near you to at least handle one first.

Yes, the Evolution Gun Works extended Picatinny rail for the Ruger 10/22 is very well made, works well, looks good, is a fair bit cheaper than the Volquartsen, and comes in 0 MOA and 20 MOA versions.

It is possible to mount some scopes correctly on the Ruger 10/22 using the stock Ruger accessory rail and a set of rings with at least one forward extension ring that moves the "ring" portion that goes around the forward scope tube at least 1" forward of the cross bolt that secures it to the rail.  But the extended Picatinny rail makes life much easier.

To answer the initial question posed by robyinbird, I've built up ten rifles this year based on the basic wooden stocked carbine model and the straight out of the box accuracy with CCI Standard Velocity ranged from 1.5 MOA to 3.5 MOA with most being around 2.5 MOA at 50yards.  The rifles were tested by installing a Vortex 6-24x50 Diamondback Tactical and shooting them as is.

From there they were tested with the barrel bands removed and the action screws tightened to 20 in. lbs.  By doing that the worst of them came in to just under 2 MOA and the best to 1.2 MOA.

robyinbird, I wish I had data on the Ruger 10/22 compact 31114 and the Ruger 31115 but I don't have anything on their respective out of the box performance but neither have the barrel band which is a definite plus as the barrel band has shown itself to be a major detriment to accuracy in the standard models.  My guess would be that either model would be as good or a bit better than the standard models out of the box so figure sub 2MOA.

For illustration I've attached a pdf that shows how various accuracy levels from 1 to 4 MOA translate to the 4th stage of the AQT.

The Volquartsen extended rail is an inch longer than the EGW.  That won't matter for everyone but will for some.

Thanks everyone for all the posts.  I appreciate it.  The biggest takeaway was practice, practice, practice.  I will and hope to attend another Appleseed soon.

Both rifles you've listed have the modular stock system.  I've got the "contest rifle" that is very similar to the Man's Best Friend edition.  It sees a great deal of use as a loaner, and I've found that most adults fit the standard LOP insert with the high comb quite well with the simple scope I have on it.

And at worst, 10/22 stocks are not super expensive, there's many quality stocks out there, and they're easy to swap.  I do like the "modular" stock enough that I wish it were available separately.
