Title: Sling Swivel Loose
Post by: OldNorth on August 11, 2019, 12:04:58 AM
I have a Ruger 10/22 Carbine with Uncle Mikes sling swivels in the stock. The front one has come loose from use. Any deeper setting swivels out there? Is the barrel band swivel a bad idea? Thanks!

Wood or Plastic?

I would not use a barrel band.
Don't use a screw that is too long on the front. It could hit on the barrel.
I  use epoxy on the threads to seat sling swivels screws. Works for either wood or plastic.
This is for the QD swivels,

I had a Camp Perry medal winner use my 10/22T at an event.
I had drilled the front swivel mount hole undersized because I knew I used tight sling tension.
The medal winner, a young man, slung up in standing and promptly ripped the stud out of the stock.

Lesson one:  I just thought I had tight sling tension.
Lesson two:  Dip a match stick in mixed epoxy, insert into the stud hole and break off flush.  Screw the swivel stud back into the hole and wait 10 minutes.  This fix has survived at least 6 years now.

For the front stud I use the "machine screw and nut."  If you rip it out you are doing something wrong. >:D

It is more work to put in, drill the hole, counter bore for the nut on the inside, trim the screw if necessary .

This is for an example only I haven't purchased this exact set.

An old woodworkers trick for a stripped out hole. Put a few wooden tooth picks and Elmer's or similar glue in the hole and screw the stud back in. In the future you will be able to unscrew it if you need to. If you want an absolutely permanent fix than use epoxy.

If you have the standard wood stock, you can get a barrel band adapter from Nero (on the forum, but I think he is back under a different forum name that I can't recall now) or search ebay for item #142976223294.  It slips onto the front and works for the GI sling.  No modification to the stock needed, I've purchased several from him to use as line loaners for shooters who come to my events without appropriate sling mounts for their 10/22, works very well.

Nero goes by TimOren now on the forum.
