Try not to giggle too much at this newbie question, But....How do you NOT crush USGI web gear AR mag pouches while you lay in prone position?? I am assuming the pouches should be in the 2 o'clock & 10 o'clock positions on your web gear.
Thanks, Bill
the best way would be to leave them in the truck you wont be needing any gear like that ....Good to have at the home range[sniper match and known distance run and gun ] but it might become a safety issue on the appleseed range..just bring 5 empty mags and we will square you away....And its not a dumb thing to ask I bet a few have shown up thinking they needed them and then took them back to the car after our safety briefing ....Pm me if you want a low down on how to use them in other ways I carried well over 800 rounds on my body for over 10 years I know a few trickss...I.E. 6 pouches and 2 saw bags one butt pack and two belts of 249 ammo and a useless radio with a dead batt..lol but thats just a infantry thing lol... :~ :~
Curio Bill,
As oldgrunt said, using the pouches is not a requirement while shooting at an Appleseed, though it certainly isn't prohibited. I would reccommend acheiving a Rifleman Score first, then adding challenges to your training such as learning to deal with your pouches and other gear attached to your LBE getting in your way or making Position building difficult.
The "Crushing" of the pouches is not nearly the issue that building a good prone position while wearing gear is.

I always unbuckled the belt and let the pouches swing out on either side of me. That assumes you have the shoulder straps attached to your web gear.
Rick
Funny what being 19 (6'3" and 215 lbs.) will do for you. I don't ever recall the M14 double mag. pouches causing an issue in prone. I'm sure they would now though. **) 6'3" with a hundred more lbs.
I have a chest rig for my M-1A mags.

Boy does that sound familiar! Especially the radio with the 'always dead' battery :o.
Ammo pouches are never in the right place if they are comfortable in the prone. Never in a good place when carrying a ruck. :-\
I always loved to carry the Pringles can with the sand for weight that we go to carry in place of 'real' 60mm mortar rounds. !@#)
Gotta love the Infantry! ;)
Might not be what you're looking for, but check out http://www.tacticaltailor.com/
I've got one of their rigs, use it on military duty, it works. A little pricey, but not in the stupid range.
Or, get an old school pistol belt, suspenders and mag pouches. Check Army/Navy stores for them.

Or eBay. All kinds of ALICE and MOLLE gear on there.

The old school method is first generation ALICE stuff. Nylon instead of canvas is about the transition.
Avoid the ALICE vest (LBV or Load Bearing Vest) that the Army is just now getting rid of. Total CRAP, that's why I went to the Tactical Tailor vest I have.

Mags are easily accessible if they are strategically placed on your shooting mat. If you were to wear a pouch, I would recommend it to be at the 4-5:00 if you are right handed or 7-8:00 position if you are left handed. Pouches in front are bound to get in the way and are much harder to access.
Get an M1 and you won't need no silly tin mags >:D
This thread started with regard for Ar-15 mag pouches, but in case others that like the M1A, HK-91 or the FAL, consider this option.
I've used this chest rig since 2006 at Appleseed shoots. It works great shooting prone. I have worn it for several AQT's and I really like it.
I've also used it whilst hog hunting here in TX on the Gulf coast hunting feral hogs.
I really like this set up.
It's the Rhodesian FAL chest mag web gear. It'll work for the M1A, HK-91 and FAL.
This guy custom makes them right here in the US. He's a one man show.
I bought mine when he first started in 2006 for 45 FRN, he charges around 75 FRN now.
Mine are well made and thus I would still buy them at the current price.
He makes them now for AK's too.
Here's the chest rig I bought in 2006 :

I hope this helps.
There's not a whole lot of options for the heavy hitters these days.
This one has worked well for me.
For anyone who is interested, here's a link to the falfiles.com forum to get in touch with the maker of this web gear :

You may have to register on this forum to see the link, heads up.
Take care all,

First off, I've never seen mag pouches get crushed..... but I've seen a lot of sore pelvic bones! GI web gear was designed by a dude sitting at a drawing board, not a grunt in the field.
The best spot for your mag, as said above, is right on your mat where your hand naturally falls when you remove it from the stock/trigger.
If you feel you need more retention and want a simple solution for Appleseed, stick it in your trigger-side leg's cargo pocket. If you're right handed, that'd be your right leg's cargo pocket. If you're in a good position, it'll put your extra mag in a natural position when you reach back and grab it. (Keep in mind you'll be slung up.... no more left-handed mag changes!)
If you're trying to "train as you fight" forget about fighting for a few days and concentrate on learning the pure skills of marksmanship. After you learn them, you'll totally re-think your stance on ammo carriage (as in, you won't need so much anymore!) mag changes (no more left hand!) and setting up your "kit" in regards to shooting position.
Just for informational purposes - I don't use it at Appleseed events, but I keep my "kit" pretty old-school with the mainstays being: ALICE Y-harness and web belt. Two mag pouches at 10 and 02, two one quart canteens (with cups) at 04 and 08, buttpack or poncho at 06, holster at 03, sm. mag pouch at 11, knife, multi-tool, and D-ring all on left shoulder strap. I usually add another mag pouch at 09:30 and 02:30 to use as extra storage for ammo, radio, mt. dew, etc. Depending on what I'm doing or where I'm going I'll add or take off a whole host of different items with the most important being a web belt extender. If you're rucked up or running, you want to be tight. But, if you're down in prone for a while or sleeping, the extender is pretty nice and will still keep your gear from rattling around or catching on stuff. On that note, make sure you secure all loose hooks and tape off straps, etc. And we've all seen the movies; you should be able to jump up and down while fully kitted out and hear nothing.
If you don't have one already, buy an ALICE rucksack with frame. You can pack everything you need inside that thing and drop it if you need to relocate quickly. OK, I'm getting way off topic here, but with a good rifle, a good pair of boots, and your "kit," you can survive just about anything.
But you don't need all that for Appleseed. BACK TO WORK, Slim!
HHEEEYYYYY!!!
