Title: Pistol Practice- Chris Sajnog - Books and Website
Post by: CountZero on May 28, 2019, 02:19:08 PM
I bought Chris's first book a few years ago, then recently got his second plus a free account to look at his website. https://chrissajnog.com/ (https://chrissajnog.com/)

I prefer the appleseed style for rifle, I tend to do better with it. Since appleseed doesn't do anything with pistols though I went hunting for something to use to maintain some proficiency. I took a few pistol classes last year with different instructors. While I enjoyed it, I didn't learn anything new except for ways to tighten up my grip.

I don't know Chris at all, don't know his organization and they don't know me. I've read a bunch of stuff (book nerd) and I've practiced a lot of the techniques. Of everything I've tried Chris's work made the most sense to me and I've improved a lot. I'm no seal sniper, and I can't seem to shoot pocket 9mm worth a darn, but I can handle a glock 19 ok. Attached is image of my last target.

I improved my grip and sight picture a lot, still working on that combination holding a proper tight grip, front sight focus, and everything else that goes into it. I'll have to get an airsoft version of the glock to practice with at home. Constantly running the slide gets old!

I found Sajnog's "How to Shoot Like a Navy Seal" book to be a chatty, irrelevant, and vague insult to the intelligence. I was so angry after reading it that I wrote him about it.

The AMU's Advanced Pistol Guide book is the one to get, available from thecmp.org

I'll check it out, though I enjoyed Chris's stuff a lot and it helped me. I've had no real history or background in this stuff so when I got it I was starting fresh so I enjoyed the chattiness to it.

National USPSA champion Ben Stoeger has a number of top notch books on training (both live and dry).

I'd highly recommend them.

Here's his newest one. https://www.amazon.com/Skills-Drills-Reloaded-Ben-Stoeger/dp/1985644657 (https://www.amazon.com/Skills-Drills-Reloaded-Ben-Stoeger/dp/1985644657)

Thanks! I'm not looking to win competitions, just hit the mark bit tighter groups. Seems I can either control recoil or get tight groups, but not both together yet. I'll pick up a copy of that see what its all about.

I haven't made it out to a range in over a month though so I might be stuck in my progress unless my work and family schedule can change. I'm ok with that though! Results I'm getting are acceptable enough for me at this point. I do get 5 - 10 min of dry fire in a day, but live fire is far and few between

Doing good work on tightening your grip WILL tighten your groups and mitigate recoil.  If you are not crushing your strong hand with your support hand, try it.  Almost certainly, you are not squeezing hard enough.  The results will surprise you.

He does a class down at our range every year. Very expensive, but folks think it's worth it.

FiremanBob:  Can you comment on how the Advanced Pistol Guide differs from the one that is freely available on the interweb...

Thanks for any feedback on differences.

The AMU guide is basically the same on the web or in book form.

A great workbook is the Zins redo of the USMC Pistol Training Workbook, found here.
http://www.ssppl.org/PDFs/USMCPistolTeamWorkbook.pdf

If you complete those exercises, one handed or two you will be an excellent shooter.

You have learned that a good grip is important. Now here are some ways to improve it.

Watch these two videos with Keith Sanderson.

Then watch the Brian Zins Videos, here is the first couple. There are 5.

If you learn to shoot accurately, you can learn to shoot accurately fast. If you learn to shoot fast, it's harder to learn to be accurate.
