Hello All,
Just wanted to share with everyone how much I have enjoyed being a part of Appleseed and building Liberty Training Rifles for me and my sons to use.
So far I've put together two, the latest being a Marlin 795.
I had never shot a 795 before so I bought one for my youngest son to use during the March Appleseed here in Alaska. The gun ran fine as it was out of the box, but had some shortcomings: trigger pull, rough finish on the bolt & feed ramp, and sights.
The gun was fairly accurate, but I thought with some work it would shoot better. So I removed the iron sights, free floated the barrel, bedded the action, and put a proper rimfire scope on it. The gun responded very nicely by shrinking groups from 7/8 inch at 25 meters to
~3/8" at 25 meters.
Next, I installed an MCARBO trigger kit. The MCARBO trigger kit for a 795 comes with all the springs, their trigger, recoil springs for hyper velocity loads and regular loads, and some extra c-clips and a small tube of grease. They also have fabulous videos on youtube for guiding you through the process.
Once installed trigger creep was reduced by a good 90% and pull weight by half: from 8+ pounds to about 4.2 lbs. I'm happy with that.
MCARBO is also good at follow up. I received a nice email from them about six days after ordering their product and they were asking if I needed any help. I didn't, but it's nice to know they give a darn about their customers.
Lastly, I've topped the rifle with a Nikon 2x7 tactical (easy turret adjustments) and the gun is a real shooter. The only other thing I need to do is get the drop at comb correct for my son and it'll be a done deal for him.

I earned my Rifleman patch with an out of the box 795 LTR and have been a big fan of the platform ever since. The MCARBO trigger upgrade is great and well worth the effort. There are a few other modifications that could potentially be of interest. Info here:

Also, for comb height, I've been using kydex to build my own cheek risers. You can get a sheet for about $5 online, and I can get 2 risers per sheet. You cut the kydex to the approximate shape of an Appleseed target. Heat up the kydex in the oven to about 325 and then drape it over the comb of the rifle, with the "head" of the target facing downrange. Hold it tight to the stock for a couple of minutes.
Once it cools, just shim it up till you get lined up with the scope, then vet-wrap or drill screw holes through and through. Done for the price of a latte.
I have two. I qualified with one and now mean to do it with irons. I had a scope last time.
I decided to leave it stock, apart from tech sights.
The other one with the fancy stainless barrel and nicer scope got the trigger job.
ATI makes a plastic riser for the FN FAL but works on a lot of rifles. Just touch it up with a dremal and screw it down. In the picture you'll see it on a couple rifles.

I have two 795's that have thousands and thousands of rounds through them. I can still score rifleman with them. Love them.
+2 on the mcarbo kit. Its a must!
One tip with the 795: Of all the shoots I have done in the rain with various 795's on the line... they are the only barrel I have seen pit or get surface rust on them from rain. ...and if its going to.. .it will do so right away. ...one of mine included. So, I keep a can of WD40 in my range bag. If its going to rain I spray the exterior of the barrel up and down... That will keep the rain off and keep it from surface rusting...
Love my 795s. Have 2 of my own and 4 that are donated loaners for the Virginia program that I get to clean ;D. Had some reliability issues and discovered that cleaning the cut outs around the chamber that the extractor fits into fixed the problem. All now run flawlessly, now, when they were starting to get a bad reputation. They were getting regular boresnaking and bolt cleanings but I was not using a pick to dig out the pits. Small detail, huge difference.
Hello Everyone,
It has been about a year and I thought I'd follow up with my own thread.
The Marlin 795s continue to work well, though one found a new home.
My middle son Christian needed a rifle to practice with. He lives in Fairbanks and he just turned 21. He wanted the Anschutz.
I mailed him one of the Marlins.
I am still tickled with how well the rifle shoots. For $139 it is hard to go wrong.
The rifle now wears a set of Tech Sights and I think it is a better training rifle now than with a scope.
