Title: Most Popular Rifles used for KD?
Post by: Fynn on September 14, 2018, 05:01:27 PM
I would like to know if there is a list of the MOST common rifles used for KD events. I understand the concept of "run what you brung" at Appleseed events but have any of you long time AS folks noted which are the most common, let's say 5 KD rifle choices, other than the M1 Garand.

If there already is a thread for this, please post a link as I have not found it.

Thanks

While I'm not an old-timer, the most popular rifle that I've seen at the couple of KD's I've been to have been AR-15's.

We used to see a lot of 10/22s and Marlin 795s ( my personal favorite 22) plus the usual ARs , m1a, etc

AR's at the top of the list. USGI 30 cal semi auto rifiles (see I didn't say GARAND). Some bolts, more current 223 with detachable magazines. Ruger American, Mossberg MVP's ran well.

There's a KD shoot in Maine next weekend, I'll try to get a list from it and reply here.

Ar-15 is the most common rifle at my KD events, followed by M1A, AR-10, and various Bolt Actions in 308/30-06 (1903, 1903-A3, Remington 700 etc).

While the M1 is not unusual, it is no longer in the top 3, and I suspect that is mostly due to the difficulties of mounting optics on that platform.

Here in my area (Texas) AR is pretty much the goto gun.

A few M1As and once in a blue moon a Garand.

And the AR is not just a squirrel gun with the right ammo.

AR15's , AR10's, and M1A's of all types with both open sights and optics make up about 95% of the rifles I've seen on the line at KD.

I'm attending my first KD shoot in October.  Planning on bringing 2x AR15s, one with iron and one with 2-7 scope.  Hoping to use the irons but bringing the scoped one just in case I need it.

Any tips on prep?  Should I come zero'ed in at 100 yards?

I'm planning on going out this weekend to test out some PMC Bronze 55gr, hoping to get good results.

EDIT:  I'm going to bring 20rd mags, hoping that will help with prone shooting.

Mag size has no impact on the quality of your prone shooting.

This is because we do not monopod (placing the mag on the ground to support the rifle is not acceptable).

No worries, I prefer the 20rd mags anyway.  Less bulky and easier to maneuver.

I'd suggest that you touch base with the shoot boss for the KD; they'll let you know the course of fire for that particular event, and what distance to come sighted in for. If you're heading out to the range for some testing, go ahead & sight in for both 25 yds & 100 yds. Write down the adjustments that you use to change from one to the other. It'll be the start of a good data sheet which you'll expand upon at the KD once you shoot at each of the other distances.

As for magazines, I also prefer 20 rounders for KDs. They're less likely to get in the way than the longer 30 rounders while in prone, but are easier to hold on to while quickly inserting them into the rifle than 10 rounders. If you have other sizes available, go ahead & bring them to try; it'll be a good experience for you. Also, bring a spare or two in case one of them starts giving you problems.

YES! The 20 round mags will not impede your arm, and will allow you to really get that elbow under the rifle. That's what I did, and I noticed that it made a huge difference in allowing me to really get my support elbow under the rifle.

To the OP:
When I did my KD, the top Rifles were the AR (in various chambers) and the M1A in .308. I had a 16in 5.56 AR, and easily shot my Rifleman score.

YMMV

My choice is a 223/556 AR with a free float hand guard and optic 3-9 is fine  2-7 would also be a good choice  and a slightly improved trigger you don't need to spend big money but a better trigger does help.

I also think it is the most cost effective way to go 2018 pricing for about 325 you can get an upper ready to shoot , for 150 you can have a lower ready to shoot , put 40-90 dollars in a trigger  150 into an optic and 40 into mounts for right about 755 your just ammo and practice away from ready to shoot a KD AQT

obviously you can shoot a KD with Irons .

make sure when you sight in to sight in at 25 meters and that you are able to take aim on your bullet hole and make another touching it , really zeroed not just close.
if your using a 6 oclock hold with irons one a 5 square drill target the bullet should be right at bottom edge were you are holding.

because with the ammo your most commonly going to see 55gr XM193  with an AR sight post 2.6 or scope mounted 2.7 inches above bore axis

zero at 25 meters should be very close to

6 inches high at 100 yards
9.75 high at 200 yards
7.75 inches high at 300 yards
3 inches low at 400 yards

if you can sight in at 25 meters and confirm you are very close to 6 inches high at 100 yards at your normal range you should be able to walk on the range and shoot as well as you do on the 25 meter AQT barring wind issues.
even better if your home range will let you go to 200 and you can confirm it there also.

with a bottom edge hold for stage 1 2 3 and a hold on the 5 on the target  at stage 4

one zero nothing to move and nothing to change or worry about for short time stages

no wind correction at stage 1 or 2

Freds simplified 3 moa at 3 hundred 3 more at 400 for a 10 mph full value wind

when in doubt make notes on the flag position shoot your best and hang extra targets backwards on the backer below, above and to the sides of the AQT you are shooting so that you can see how far off the paper you are and make that correction.

I like the 20 round mags they are enough to get a hold of and not so much they get in the way in prone

30s do get in the way

10s work fine also , just that stuffing that 10th round in some is difficult , so if your location allows 20s they don't cost hardly any different than  10s and make for easy loading

I shot Rifleman on the first and second AQT of the day , the 3rd was after lunch and I ate to much to get back into seated fast enough and left 5 round in the mag seated , I needed 2 more on paper for a 3rd rifleman score , I did get rifleman score again on the 4th of the day , Sunday I collected data with a bipod while others ran AQT's  on both my hand load and the XM193 this is why I have these numbers well defined to share.

I was using a 20 inch heavy barrel KTM tactical AR Upper with  free floated hand-guard  I picked up at a local shop on an Anderson lower with a MOE stock and grip , the lower parts kit was otherwise mill spec , I used a hardened and polished single stage trigger group I think I caught on sale for 30 dollars and a set of JP 3.5 pound reduced power springs I think the spring kit was about 6 dollars .  the optic was a 3-9x50 Vortex cross fire in a AR-stoner midway mount

that is a heavy rifle at 10.5 pounds  heavier than it needed to be.

I have since built another AR with a Brownells complete upper that they are selling for right about 300 dollars for a free floated complete upper , I would build with their or similar upper again it has a 16 inch barrel  A2 contour and with optic that rifle is 6.5 pounds  it is a 300 blackout and not really good past 250 yards but given it's 200 yard performance if it was in a longer range 5.56 I think it would do just fine on KD AQTs  that is what most of the others at the KD that scored riflemen were running a normal weight free float 5.56 with an optic . that is what my next build will be.

one guy was running a A2 setup and when he gave up on the scope that was clearly having issues  he did shoot rifleman on the last AQT with irons .

everyone at the August 2017 Racine KD event  was running an AR when they shot rifleman  we had 1 AK on the line Saturday , it was a
serviceman who borrowed a rifle because he was stationed at Great lakes Naval and didn't have his rifle with him, he struggled knocking hard a the door to a rifleman score he  borrowed  an AR for Sunday and shot a rifleman score.

my reloads run me 20 cents each my 400 yard test group from the bipod with a rear bag that was a sock full of rice was just under 4 inches tall by 2.25 inches wide for 10 rounds It was not as good with the bulk XM193 but would still easily shoot a rifleman score  , I am seeing 223/5.56 ammo on the shelf or online for 29-39 cents a round to me the AR makes so much sense for KD  for about 110 dollars you can shoot all weekend  that was the shelf price for federal XM193 last year when I bought it at walmart 54.99 a 150 round box I saw it today online for 185.99 for 500 rounds.
it is an easy gun to build, easy to work on , everything you need to build one fits in a small tool bag , I have built them sitting at the dining room table . it is an accurate platform, it is low recoil , flat shooting , easy to adapt to different size shooters and about as economical as they have ever been parts are so readily available and ready to drop in.

I have shot deer , targets and varmint.

here are some pics , this is the 300 blackout , this young man has been knocking hard at the door to rifleman , he has made progress and he is persisting , here he is at 200 yards laying in a nice group that would easily fit on a reduced 100 yard AQT when he gets it all put together with the time limits and transitions he will be there.
other than a front paraclip mount nothing about this gun has changed , I was still waiting for it to get here when this pic was taken Sept 2017 when the money comes together I will be building him that gun in 223/5.56. the only difference will be the barrel and gas tube.

Nice writeup and rig. I am in the middle of yet another build. This time I am pinning a F marked FSB on a 20" barrel and running float tube. I plan on running a Flat top upper as usual with a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x24 with a A2 Hard BUIS (probably will go with a Bravo or a LMT).

Cannot wait to shoot Rifleman again after all these years...it has been too long.

I went back and reviewed the AAR for Aug 19-20th 2017 Racine WI KD , the shooter I though had gotten his KD rifleman with the A2 and iron sights must have just missed it https://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=51856.0

there were 4 of us , Myself, Michelle, Bobby and Caleb.  4 of 7 shooters isn't to bad others were knocking hard on the door.

Michelle is a fine shooter

Caleb was the Young soldier borrowing rifles.

I think Bobby was running an A2 configuration fixed stock and non free floated hand guard with a 3 power scope.

the rest of us free floated ARs

I found on my non free floated AR that when I attached the sling to the swivel on the front sight tower that a tight sling pulled my groups the barrel was being stressed , moving the sling back to the hand guard more evenly distributed that stress on the barrel and made if better still not the same as free floated pulling on the barrel does effect where it shoots.

for those looking to attend a KD , if you can start up a 100 yard reduced "micro" KD at your range it is really good practice. My home range Green County Rifle Club started up what we called service rifle shoot  we have it once a month on a Sunday morning , it is great practice and you might just inspire some of your club members who were on the fence about attending an Appleseed to attend one. we run the reduced Appleseed D target at 25, 50 , 75 and 100 yards to simulate the full distance on our 100 yard range it really does look very similar to the way the target looks at full range.

you will need to get out to the range and determine where to hold for each stage I switch to a 50 yard zero when not at an Appleseed I have the change written down in my book generally I aim for the 5 at 25 yards , the V at 50 , and bottom edge hold for 75 and 100   this is for me 1 1/4 low at 25 , zero at 50 , 1 inch high at 75 yards , and 1.75 inches high at 100 yards.

a 50 yard zero is a good hunting zero as well for the 223 , the near and far zero are 50 /250 yards approximately and only about 2.5 high at about 150 yards  a 5 inch range that keeps you on most targets in hunting range.

get out and shoot , if you can build an AR I don't think you will be disappointed in how they shoot and you will learn some things along the way to make you able to replace nearly any part with a few simple tools.

It seems like a person who knows very well what they are about should be able to build , fix and do the maintenance on their rifle the availability of drop in parts makes this very possible in the AR platform.

OK, Skowhegan Me. KD equipment used.

11 shooters, 14 rifles fired on the line.

Majority by far were AR'a in 223. 3 were iron sights, 2  of which were A@ models. All the others were with a scope or optic (ACOG).

1 Ruger precision rifle in 308 shot most of the day. 1 Mini 14 scoped, shot well but aftermarket mags tended to not cooperate well in the rapidfire stages with the reload.

A VZ-58 and a Ruger GSR in 308 were also used for a short time.

What I have seen over a few KD's.
AR-15's
M1A's
Garands
I have seen a few

Rem 700's
Mosin
FAL's

An AK
Ruger Mini's

But mostly AR's and M1A/Garand

what might be the most helpful is if when a person shoots Rifleman if we started tracking what they shot it with , just basic .

Pete B.   (Trapperpete)  223  optic

maybe could add AR and  FFB for free float barrel
we would want to do this in a way that would still be OK with the participants  but it they singed the photo waver it would be fairly obvious just by looking.

Pete B (trapperPete) 223 AR Optic FFB

this could actually be cool for 25M AS events also how many people do we have asking about building heavily modified 10/22s  maybe if they saw in an AAR

Pete B. (trapperpete)  22lr Savage MKII-FV optic

and maybe better yet we just ask those who are willing to comment in the AAR for their shoot what they used that way it is 100% voluntary.

but I think it would be really good info for those who plan to attend the events.

what was at KD doesn't mean it scored KD it doesn't mean it was the rifle but no one goes to a KD unless they have a 25M rifleman patch

after watching Caleb run an AK day one so close to qualifying and switch to an AR day 2 and solidly shoot KD rifleman I wonder how wise a choice an AK is , can it be done It probably can , the biggest question is it when the stars align and you get the perfect group or is it something repeatable over and over till your to fatigued to see strait.

other good advice might be if you can keep 3 out of 4  five shot groups 2 inches or under at 100 yards it should to if it will do better great.

I wonder how often we have a 2MOA shooter and a 3MOA gun and they are knocking hard at the score all day but never get it.
I know there is frustration in if 100% of the people attending a KD event are already rifleman at 25M why do we have such a low number of KD rifleman?

Semi auto AR platform rifles are the modern fad, but the roots of the AQT go further back in time, a time when the AR and the M1 Garand were not yet available and a time when bolt actions were the modern fad of the day.  Just because a rifle platform is not in the 'most seen' category today,  does not imply that the rifle platform is not capable of earning the full distance Rifleman score.

Both the 1903 and the 1903A3 are more than capable of achieving the score.  As are the Mauser, Remington 700, and an entire herd of models by Remington, Savage, Browning, Tikka, Winchester and......

The real answer is that most any rifle will do, if you do your part.

I will correct my statement above , KD events do not have 25M rifleman as a prerequisite.

Wisconsin KD events state
This is an Advanced Known Distance event. Only previous Appleseed attendees should sign up.

I had taken that to mean rifleman but it does not necessarily mean that , I was reading into it Rifleman.

but I think it is a good idea and will save the shooter expensive ammunition and frustration.

The other question is what can you afford/want to spend on your system?

System:
Rifle- how accurate is it?  What does it cost to improve it? How difficult is it to work on?
Magazines- cost, availability
Ammo- cost, availability
Sights- does it come with good iron sights, can they be upgraded, can a scope be added, at what cost?

This is why I lean towards ARs.  They are inexpensive in comparison to a lot of other alternatives, easy and cheap to shoot, mags and parts are everywhere and they are easy to drop a scope on.

Just my two cents.

Speaking of scopes...

What power(s) seem to work best? Would I simply use the same power optic that I do on a .22 rimfire @ 25yds? I mean, that's why we are shooting scaled targets, correct?

I understand that KD means dealing with wind but that doesn't affect choice of optic in this case, does it?

If I'm comfortable with a 4x optic and use a caliber that shoots pretty flat (like .223) then it should be reasonable for KD, yes?

if you were looking for a bot gun to run at a KD the Mossberg MVP line would be a good place to look.

so many of the rifles out there are running Accuracy International Mags they run 40-50 dollars a mag some of the others are running their own proprietary mags and the price is in the same place 40-50 dollars.
it is handy to have 3 mags and 30 or 40 is a lot easier than and extra hundred for 2 mags

the MVP5.56 runs AR15 mags and the MVP7.62 runs AR10 p-mags , ar-10 mags , and M-14 mags

the MVP5.56 is running about 575 for another 200 you could have a 3x9x40 scope of decent quality and rings maybe even 2 extra mags.

the MVP7.62 is about 675  AR-19 P-mags run about 20 each I am running a little nicer glass

but I had no problem shooting KD rifleman with a $149.00 3-9x50 vortex crossfire I think I caught it on a black Friday sale for $119.99  the warranty is very good on the vortex should it break

MVP's may not have the smoothest bolt in the world but they get better with cycling and are plenty functional

if you want to run a bolt gun your going to need one that reloads 5 rounds easily.

I like variable optics but have seen people shoot KD rifleman with a 3x ACOG

I feel confident I could shoot it with a 2-7 power scope and do fine , I used a 3-9 , it wasn't till I got to 500 yards that I was wishing I had more glass than 3-9

if you like 4X yes you should be able to do it with that my advice is go to a store with a big parking lot pace off 400 yards to the door , ask when you think you have found your optic it you can take it to look outside if they will walk with you to the front door , now look 400 yards away see what it looks like or if you have a 4X optic on your 22 go look at AQT targets at 400 yards see how they look

Correct on all counts. I'm currently shooting Service Rifle matches with a 1-4x scoped AR, and it's fine at 600 yards on a 3 ft bullseye. You would be fine with 4x at 400, although I'd recommend target turrets for KD unless you're really into holding over.

if your running 223 on a KD target turrets are not necessary stage 1,2,3 are a bottom edge hold on a 25 meter zero and stage 4 is holding were the bell curves in or on the 5 if you can see that I can see the 5 at 9x

Sure, and it has nothing to do with 223. As I said, you can hold over, or even hold center with battle sight zero. I use that to hit steel gongs at the local range.

However, John Garand (bless him) put click adjustments on his rifle for good reason, and because of that we can teach Inches, Minutes, and Clicks at Appleseed. IMNSHO, knowing your sighting system and come-ups is the best way to start applying your experience at 25m on the KD range. After all, what's the first step of firing a shot? Sight Picture. What are the keys to marksmanship? Being relaxed and consistent.
