Title: "reviving" tumbling media
Post by: airplanejoe on July 29, 2018, 10:18:41 AM
Howdy,

This one for reloaders. After tumbling about 12 batches, cases still come out with what appears a light crust on portions of the neck. If I replace the media they come out clean. My conclusion is that media degrades with use?? For years I just clean the necks with brasso, or change the media.

My question: Is there an additive product that can "revive" old media. I use exclusively crushed walnut.

Thanks,

aj

I do not recommend trying the Lyman liquid, my experience was that it became gummmy and remained that way until I replaced 50% of the media with clean walnut.

Hornady dry media brass polish or Frankfort arsenal media polish works wonders. Add the prescribed amount to your walnut, let tumbler run for about 15 minutes then and add brass. It will be looking better than brand new in a couple of hours. Definitely do not use brasso, all my research says brasso is no good for cases and longevity of your brass. Apparently the immense amount of ammonia in brasso degrades your cases and makes them brittle.

I use Lucas in my truck and tumbler

It depends upon how dirty the media is.  I personally add a little (a capfull) odorless mineral spirits.

How many people can wash their media? Don't tell the wife and make sure to run a load of old work wash rags and towels after your done. The walnut can be washed by pouring it into old panty hose and tying it off.  Wash and hang somewhere where birds, squirrels, and rats cant get to it. Takes several weeks to dry and reposition it every couple of days to help it dry.

I add a capful of Nu Finish to each batch of tumbling, run it 10-15 minutes to mix well, then add my brass in. Couple hours later and the brass has a nice shine.

You, Sir, are a very patient man  :))
The washing instructions are great, but you could spread the media on cookie sheets and bake until dry, only takes half an hour or so @ 350.
P.S. Don't burn it up :)

Walnut tumbler media can be purchased as walnut blasting media,(as in sand blasting) comes in 50 lb bags, with no pittman-robertson tax applied, still not cheap but when the sharp edges wear off the particles, it just does not clean as good.
I buy mine from a local company that refinishes log homes.

The washing sounds good.

As cheap as it is I don't worry about reviving it.

$25 for 25 quarts.
