Title: Stanag Scope to Bassett M1A Mount?
Post by: HammBone on May 08, 2018, 02:30:48 PM
I can't see 400 yard targets very well these days. My last open sight Appleseed has convinced me of this sad aging byproduct.

I have an M1A that I'm going to break out for a KD shoot this fall. I've got a nice 3.5-10 Leupold scope and rings for a Bassett mount, but I'm thinking that might be overkill. I also have a really nice Steiner 4X scope that fits the claw mount for my HK91. It is a Stanag mount scope. I have read that a 4X is a very good compromise for AS shoots.

Is there a way to marry the two and still keep a reasonable scope height?

Not that I'm aware of, but in my experience (KD with a scoped M1A), your scope height is going to be killer. I ended up making a block of wood riser for mine to get my head where it needed to be without killing my neck. if you want, I can PM you some pics of what I did. BTW, I used a vortex diamondback 3-12x42mm

Sure. I'd like to see what you did.

I've got another M1A in 6.5 Creedmoor with adjustable comb and length of pull. However, its ballistics wouldn't play well with Appleseed come-up teaching since it only drops 4 inches at 1000 yards.  >:D

Have you considered swapping the stocks for the KD shoot?

I had not, but now that you mention it...

Might be a better option. I played around with a bunch of mounts and adapters last night, but nothing worked. Eye relief was wrong. Scope was too high. That Steiner was made for an HK91 and that's what it fits.

I have a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 3.5-10x40 that might work OK. Will see how it does with the loaded's stock.

I swapped out the stocks last night putting the 308 National Match guts into the 6.5 Creedmoor's Archangel stock. That worked fine and with a bunch of futzing I have good eye relief and cheek weld using my Leupold 3.5-10x40 on the Bassett mount. Thanks for the idea.

Going the other way didn't work as the Creedmoor guts would not fit the National Match wooden stock. It has an extra boss right near the operating rod spring guide attachment pin that the National Match action does not have.

I glad that it worked for you.

I may be wrong but it looks to me the "extra boss" in your photo is part of the operating rod pin which may have moved out a little bit. Can you move the operating rod guide around a bit so that this pin  can be pushed in further?  Just a thought based on what I see in the photo.

Terry,

I had a closer look. That is part of the op rod guide pin and moves in and out. However, it's "in" position results in the picture you saw. When out, it protrudes further. I looked at both stocks. The Archangel has a slot molded in to clear the head of the pin when it's in. The wooden stock from the National Match does not have that slot and its pin doesn't protrude. Not sure what the difference is. The Creedmoor is brand new. The NM I have had for about 6 years.
