Title: Dry Fire Software?
Post by: baddarryl on November 17, 2017, 12:23:56 PM
Hi all. I know I saw it discussed somewhere in here (maybe by Navybowhunter). I am looking for one of those sensors that tracks your shot, trigger pull, etc and sends it to the computer for analysis. I don't need one of those $1200 Olympic rigs, but would not hesitate to drop 2 or 3 hundred. What has worked for you guys. I think this would make dry fire way more interesting. Thanks.

The MantisX is a unit that has pretty good reviews. Instructors also get a nice discount.
See the thread here: https://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=52500.msg350904

You need a momentary laser like the SIRT Bolt for the AR15 or snap caps that emit a laser pulse for this one to work. $120

SIRT AR15 bolt $140-200

If the MantisX had an adapter for a normal target rifle instead of requiring a rail, I'd be interested.

We were just discussing alternative means to mount the ManisX this weekend. Some experimentation needs to be done. I have no idea as to how sensitive it is to a non standard mount. I will report further on this later on.

It would be nice if it could be easily attached to a students rifle at an event. And of course any of our own rifles.

The limited research I have done on the Mantis system, reveals that it appears to have been designed for pistol shooters.

The reviews I read are fairly old, a few years ago, so....as stated in here lately....a few AS'rs have bought the system and it appears to be working for them.

SCATT is the close to the top of the mark pricing wise....but knowing what I know today about it, I would sell a few rifles to buy the system again!  It is that good.

But....

There are other systems as well, cheaper than the SCATT but likely more costly than the Mantis.

TRACE:  traceshooting.com

They seem to offer something very similar to the SCATT for a lot less $$.  I just did a search for electronic trainers, and the TRACE system seems pretty good.

I would caution the consumer/buyer to do a LOT of research before spending any $$ on a training system.  It may not be the best system for this discipline.  3 position rifle shooting is the discipline I am talking about.

Meaning, the Mantis is primarily geared towards pistol, there are several shotgun type trainers out there as well.  Many of the shooting forums/blogs etc, have a plethora of info on these different training systems.

OK...what about a very low cost option? A laser attached to the rifle somehow, will also accomplish one of the most beneficial things that the SCATT and TRACE system show and that is NPOA on the target.

Now...15 feet away, dry firing, how could a laser work?  Well....if bright enough, you will see it on the paper.  You could also have a spouse/child or friend at the target end (NO AMMO) to provide feedback on the NPOA.

There are options....as costly as a SCATT or as cheap as a laser attached to the rifle.  The goal really for 3 position shooting, is the NPOA feedback that is provided.  Everything else the trainers provide is excellent info....but...one can learn trigger control and follow thru thru dry firing without a trainer.  Trainers just make it more pleasurable for some.

Hope this helps.

Since the topic refers to software, here is another software program that is very cheap, for learning UKD skillsets with MIL or MOA.

It is called "Long Range Shooting Sim", google that and you will come to the page.  I believe there is a demo version you can mess with, and the full version as I recall costs less than $40.

The software hosts a variety of reticles, but the meat is in the "math" one needs to do to make the shot in varying wind conditions.

I have a large flat screen TV in my garage (practice area), and have had a few instructors over and we spent a few hrs having a few drinks and learning to properly calculate distance using the reticle and make wind calls.

Figured I would mention that one again, as it is a great program for wind estimating and ranging.

MantisX Shooting Performance System does anyone have one? and how well does it work? I could be wrong but from what I read in their ad the sensor will fit on a Picatinny rail, and They do have an adapter for many Rifles but I am not sure about a Ruger 10/22 with a factory tapered

For about 150.00 dollars, It maybe a great addition to Dry Practice.

I'm supposed to do a review for their stuff. They had sent me one to check out and write about. However I'd given the Mantis to another instructor since I was too busy and forgot all about it. I'll PM him and bug him until he does the review.

I've talked to two other instructors and they really liked theirs.

Glock1911 and his wife are some of the voices on the Next Level Training software.  He may be willing to write a review of that system as well.

*** THREAD NECROMANCY WARNING ***

Given the rise of the Appleseed Pistol Clinic program, I figured I'd get some grace for bringing this thread back from the dead.

I just got one (x10 version) not to long ago to use on my EDC (G17-4).  With that version, you get several adapters for a broad brush of applications.  Using the Project Appleseed discount, you still get a pretty sizable discount, making the unit less than anywhere else you can find it online.

I'm enjoying it so far.  I'll run it for about 20-30 minutes a night, before bed.  Haven't tried mounting it to a 10/22 or AR yet, but it doesn't look like it's overly technical or difficult.  That said, it remains to be see whether shots (dryfire or otherwise) will register for those rifles.  I've read "yes", but seeing is believing.

More to follow.
