We had perfect weather for our four shooters on Saturday. The range only accommodates 200 yards, so we worked on "Battle Sight Zero". We used sighter targets at 75, 100 and 200 yards to verify the point of impact at each distance. Then we shot the AQT with no sight adjustments. Scores were pretty good, considering all four shooters were using iron sights. Two had M-1 Garands, one an M1A and one an SKS. The one shooter who made KD rifleman did so after switching to an AR15 with a scope.
Everyone learned things about their rifle, themselves and exterior ballistics. We covered the topics of Target Detection, Range Estimation and Making the Shot. For our history, we talked about the role of Kentucky long rifles and their owners in key battles of the Revolutionary war. Marksmanship is important, but it takes a deep dedication to the cause of liberty to gain the victory.

It was my longest drive yet, but the 2 1/2 hours to Mariposa from the East Bay was more than worth it. The weather was great, the instruction top-notch, and I couldn't have asked for better company. I shot my first KD with my Russian SKS, and after working out a few kinks it performed very well. I, not so well. Still have a few kinks to work out internally.
While it was my first trip to Mariposa, I was saddened to learn it might be my last, at least for awhile.
It seems KP, our shoot-boss, is pulling up roots to head for greener pastures outside of the Golden State. Who could blame him? But I hope someone new steps up soon to fill the shootboss position, because we are losing Appleseed locations throughout central California. Being that Appleseed shoots are my favorite hobby, I'll drive as far as necessary, but within a 200 mile radius of home would be nice.
Thank you KP and fellow shooters for a great Saturday!
