Title: Dummy Training Stock?
Post by: baddarryl on November 09, 2017, 11:06:57 AM
Hi all. I am going to put together a demo stock. I have an old one from a Marlin 981 T. I am just going to get one of those cheap Dollar store lasers for it. Seems I used one at IBC that had a mock trigger as well as a sight post. Maybe you guys could post some pics? I am handy, but not the most creative. I know PHenry likes to use real rifles for demos and I would too, but not every Shoot Boss will allow that. Thanks.

I second what Cable___Guy said, that laser is exactly right for $20. The top of the "figure-8 mount" works okay as a front sight, and the laser is easy to see.

Couple that with a "long enough" 1" dowel (that fits the mount!) from Home Depot, a couple of hose clamps from your FLAPS (Friendly Local Auto Parts Store), and you got yourself a Demo Rifle!   O0

P.S.  Don't paint the dowel  :P

Thanks. That is exactly what I will do.
How about a mock trigger?

Oh, I've got a great one for triggers - courtesy of an idea from Mr. Smith & Mrs. Smith

Buy some dog clickers, similar to this
https://www.amazon.com/ArRord-Dog-clicker-black/dp/B005TF0876/ref=sr_1_9?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1510245051&sr=1-9&keywords=dog+clicker

Open one of them up and just screw in the metal part with a small screw.

Keep a few others intact for teaching trigger control.

I've personally found that these are much easier than the pen click technique, to explain trigger control & reset - there is a loud, audible "click" both where the trigger break and the reset would be, that everyone can hear.

That is a really good idea. I was wondering if there was some way to rig up a mock one on the rifle itself?

Absolutely.  I don't have a picture, but I can describe what I've seen done:

Crack the outer plastic casing.  Throw it away.

You're left with a metal bar, and a yellow "button" on the bar.  The clicking sound is made by the metal bar.  Take a small screw and attach the metal bar to the trigger well of the dummy stock.  This leaves you with the yellow button where the trigger is.  You'll push the yellow button, i.e. "pull the trigger", which will perform the clicking sound - since the other end of the metal bar is immobile, and screwed into the stock.

I hope that this description clears things up.  You can also PM Mr. Smith and / or Mrs. Smith for a picture of this setup.

Another option for the trigger is one of Nero's 3D printed models.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Demo-practice-trigger-for-Ruger-10-22-stock/142515385057

It has one of the GI WW2 clickers built-in, and is sized to drop in a Ruger 10/22 stock. It can also be modified pretty easily, as it's made of ABS plastic.

Personally, I like using an empty stock with no barrel. I think it makes everyone more relaxed when demonstrating & pointing it around. Different strokes for different folks, though.

I'll second the $20 Pinty green laser from Amazon. It's crazy bright.
