A Rifleman Persists
This weekend saw summer come into full force in Maryland. Heat indexes were in the upper 90s and humidity is starting to creep up there. Despite this, 11 shooters eager to learn showed up to learn. And learn they did. From Saturday AM to Sunday PM, these students put in work and the work paid off.
In order to accommodate the number of students who showed up, we ran relays. While it did slow the pace of the day, it also allowed us to get more one on one instruction as well make keeping an eye on safety more manageable. On Sunday, one shooter was unable to return, but this allowed us to run everyone on the line.
For the Saturday AM Redcoat, 7 out of 11 shooters were able to qualify at any distance. Sunday AM Redcoat saw 2 shooters clear the target and earn the Maryland Front Sight patch - Congratulations to Tom M and Gary B. Sunday PM Redcoat saw 100% of the shooters qualify at any distance. Well done!
Sunday also saw Gary B put up a very respectable score of 227 on his AQT - excellent shooting, sir! There were a lot of first time Appleseeders who were knocking at the door by putting up scores in the 190s. Keep at it! Persistence is key!
The students were also very attentive during the 3 Strikes and there were some great discussions after each strike. It is always a pleasure to talk about the history with such engaging students. Due to the line unable to go hot until 10AM on Sunday morning, we were able continue our discussions about the history as well as some of the finer points of marksmanship.
Thank you to Berwyn Rod & Gun for being an excellent host to Appleseed and thank you to the regular Bowie Appleseed instruction team of MikeCee, Flint Locke, and PB4Y1 who ensured that the event ran smoothly. This event could not have happened without your experience and help!
Many thanks to Berwyn Rod and Gun Club for hosting, and all the instructors for showing us what to do with the range. I always enjoy showing up to learn something rather than just make a lot of noise.
Missed rifleman, but eager to take another try sometime this summer or fall. Next time I will make sure that I bring the friends that bailed on me.
