Title: Jim Owen's Jarheadtop
Post by: rap36case on May 08, 2017, 05:26:23 PM
Has anyone discussed the series of books here by Jim Owens at http://www.jarheadtop.com/ ?

I am wondering if his Marine Corp. style is compatible with AppleSeed?

Yes, jmdavis has put up a number of posts over the past couple of years dealing with Owens's ideas and recommending the books.

I have his CD/DVD's.  They are dated....lots of static and noise on the videos.  However....

His advice on wind calling is excellent.  Cut it in half!  LOL....if ya understand his rationale...it makes perfect sense.

Call wind at 600 full value 10 MPH.  Hmmm, approx 6 MOA right?  Well....cut that in half.  It does work.  Wind never stays steady at the same speed.

He is a legend in the HP community.

Recently bought the set of books, and I think they are worthwhile. (Could have used a proofreader, as could nearly all self-publishing authors, but there's nothing too egregious.)

They are principally geared toward HP and CMP match shooting, but that's Owens' game, and he's darn good at it. Still, I found them pleasant enough going and there is much that applies to "Appleseed-style" shooting, particularly the Service Rifle material.

And yes, his "amended wind rule" works a treat.

If you read his books you will see that they influenced Appleseed thought a great deal. His info on NPA and the whole Army man example, show up in AS teaching.

I remember the night that I first read about NPA. It was years before I was involved with Appleseed, but I recognized the importance for field shooting.
