Happy 60th Birthday to the M14 rifle!
60 years ago today - on May 1st 1967 1957 - the M14 was adopted as the new service rifle!
Amazingly enough, the M14 is still in use today, testament to the genius of Mr. John C. Garand.

I thought It was adopted in the 50s? Wiki shows it as 1957. Ah, wait the age is correct, the date is wrong.

My apologies for the typo... thanks for looking out! :-)
An Amazing rifle.
I shot the M14 when I was on the Alaska and FORSCOM Army rifle team.
Match grade M14 and Lake City Match Ammo. 600 yards, open sights, 6 inch X ring all day long...
Love mine...all of em'! :F
I stopped at the National Firearms Museum on the way home from an NRA coaching class. After I stood in front of theMMayflower Carbine brought over by John Alden and shook, I later made a note to self: get a Mark IV and an M14.
What would one be looking for in an M14 that could drive tacks with iron sights?

People are very unhappy with Springfield Armory, Inc. (SAI) right now, but they do make a fine M1A (semi auto version of the M14).
I have a SAI Loaded with a stainless barrel. It's almost 20 years old. From the bench this past weekend, it put 5 rounds of Federal bulk XM80 - sub MOA with iron sights. It shoots wayyy better than I do.
Next jump up from the Loaded is the M1A National Match. It's same rifle with hooded rear sight and a bedded action.
Top tier is the M1A Supermatch. Ramblin' Wreck can tell us about that model.
Other companies make good M1A rifles, but I don't own one so I can't comment on it.
At the moment I can't stand Springfield Armory Inc but I love my SAI M1A Super Match. I don't have enough experience shooting it yet and although it is absolutely impractical for 99.9% of the shooters out there it might be the next to last gun I'd ever get rid of. I fell in love with the design of he rifle at Fort Campbell, KY in 1969 when I shot the 2nd highest qualification score in the training Bn with one. It was a sad day when they took it from me and handed me that poodle shooter. If you never got to experience an M14 on full auto you missed out. Couldn't hit crap after the first round but the thrill was immeasurable. It took me till 1999 to actually buy one which I owned till I
conned convinced Maximum Ordinate that he couldn't live without it. I didn't charge extra for the broken in sling and cheek piece.
One thing I did re learn is to not assume the rear drum is tight enough right out of the box. In the process of running it to the bottom and back to the top after applying a little grease the sight popped right out of the base. DOH! :slap:

I'm glad I don't own an SAI version right now! I do love my LRB though. The like new HRA 62 barrel on it will shoot better than me. If you're going for accuracy I'd consider something at least along the lines of the loaded version. It will have a better barrel and some accuracy mods over a standard version. Or you could step up and get a match version. Really depends on how much you want to spend. They can get expensive fast.
