Anybody using dime drills in their practice/instruction? I did a quick search of the forum and didn't see anything on them, but I know they are pretty big on them in the Army. I seem to recall that we started in the prone supported and then moved on to prone unsupported once we had that down...
Honestly, I never bother with coin/washer drills.
Two reasons:
1) Not convenient on all firearms (does not work that well with anything round profile, etc).
2) Your front sight will tell you the exact same thing a coin is going to tell you, and never falls off.
I get why it works for people though.
Same here. Did them all the time in that army and it was easy enough that we'd balance it on the SAW barrel load the bipod and squeeze the trigger. Being an open bolt belt fed machine gun there's a lot of jarring going on and the dime could stay in place.
As a marksmanship drill it was a PITA because we had to cycle the bolt (which knocked the washer off) then fumble around and balance it on the barrel where it would take a really bad trigger jerk to dislodge it.
Ball & Dummy (both known and unknown) is a much more effective drill.
