Title: PLUG for Blank Wall Dry Firing
Post by: navybowhunter on April 25, 2017, 10:51:52 AM
JMDavis and many other HP shooters have counseled me in the past on blank wall dry fire, and the importance of it.

I call this an Epiphany, because a light bulb came on a few days ago when I was dry fire practicing.

Purpose of the blank wall dry fire is for what?

To learn the trigger!  I heard that part for the past few years.  Got it! LOL

But wait....there's more!

Recently I decided to get into Bullseye shooting with the pistol.  Picked up a 1911 and started to shoot the 50 yard SCATT target Bulleseye style.  One handed, tough stuff!

I was putting up respectable scores on the SCATT and was wondering why.  I called another smart pistol shooter (JM Davis) and we discussed.

I just posted up about sight alignment, it was for a rifle discussion.   If sight alignment is important with the rifle, it is CRUCIAL with the pistol!

So, this new 1911 could use some trigger work.  It is a bit gritty.  Mike and I were discussing that....and then blank wall came up again like it always does!

AHA moment!

What is the purpose for blank wall dry fire?  To learn the trigger right?

Yup....and how do we learn the trigger?  LOL...by blank wall dry firing.  Sounds silly almost.

But here is the KEY!

Yes....learn the trigger, the weight at which it starts to break, etc. but what are you looking for when dry firing?  You should be
LOOKING TO BREAK THE TRIGGER WITHOUT DISTURBING SIGHT ALIGNMENT!

Duhhh, yes...elementary.  But....it all just came together for me and it took me using a pistol to figure out why the blank wall stuff is important.

If that front sight moves at ALL when dry firing, you have not learned your trigger.  Assuming grip, stance etc are correct.

Why Blank Wall?  Because when aiming at a target, the target becomes a distraction.  Blank wall (bright blank wall) will help one to learn to manipulate the trigger without disturbing sight alignment.

I got a lot of blank wall dry fire ahead of me.  This will also really help with shot calling.  Another topic.

We learn when we are ready to learn. But we have to have been exposed to the information to know it.

In the defensive pistol shooting world we call that the (du-du-duhhhhh ominous music) Wall Drill. http://pistol-training.com/drills/wall-drill (http://pistol-training.com/drills/wall-drill)
