A couple of months back, I was looking for a good Appleseed .22 for my kids and ended up purchasing a Remington 597. Since then, I have had many issues with the rifle.
First, I discovered that the screw through the barrel wedge was not tightened all the way, allowing considerable wiggle between the barrel and the receiver. I fixed that by running the screw all the way in and torquing it down with some fresh loctite.
Next, I was unable to sight the rifle in with the included 3-9x32 scope and tip off rings. I discovered that this was due to tolerance stack and was eventually able to get the rifle sighted in by swapping the rings around.
Most recently, the trigger quit functioning. I disassembled the mechanism and found that the pin that connects the trigger to the sear had come out. I put it back in and noticed a barely perceptible snap that apparently is intended to hold the pin in place. There is no snap ring, e-clip, or any other mechanism for holding the pin in place (it doesn't have clearance from the hammer for any such protrusion). Anyway, I took the rifle to the range and shot it, brought it back home, and verified that the pin had not started backing out.
This past weekend, at the Appleseed in New Philadelphia, OH, the pin once again came out while my daughter was shooting. She had shot maybe 20 or 30 rounds through it. After the shoot, I took it apart again and took some photos. The picture below shows the problem:

I put the pin back in and, this time, I gave it a good whacking with a center punch in an attempt to upset the pin into its bore and hopefully prevent it from coming back out:

The trigger passes a function test for now, but I haven't fired it yet. We'll see if this ends up being a permanent fix to the problem or not. By the way, this is merely for informational purposes. If you don't have much mechanical experience, I'd recommend leaving this to a gunsmith. This trigger assembly is extremely flimsy and difficult to get back together properly, and, if you don't get it right, you could end up with a gun that is unsafe or, at best, a trigger that simply does not function.
Hi St8space,
If no one here can help out check rimfirecentral.com.
Tons of great info over there.

So, I took the Remington to the range today and shot some groups with a variety of ammo. I shot a little over 200 rounds and, so far, the trigger is holding up. I had two malfunctions, both of which were failures to fire, with no evidence of a strike on either round (one Federal Gold Medal Match, the other Lapua Ceneter X). Both rounds fired upon reloading into the rifle. The results follow:

I also replaced the tip off scope and rings with a rail and a Bushnell 4-12x40. I'd like for it to be lower, but the lower rings I had put the magnification adjustment ring right up against the rail. Right now I have more of a chin weld than a cheek weld, so I will need to build up the stock I suppose. Still, it shot reasonably well, so I am pleased with it for now I reckon.

Those are great looking groups.
Did you adjust the scope down or is that just the different point of impact between the different ammunition?

Other than initial sighting in, no adjustments, that's just how they ended up.
Nice report!
What software did you use to make the bullet hole overlays?
P.S. The CCI Mini Mag stats accidentally got duplicated on the Federal Auto Match report.

It's a free Android app called Range Buddy. It seems to work pretty well, but there really aren't any instructions with it, so you kinda have to figure it out on your own. Btw, if you happen to try it, make sure that you set the scaling BEFORE you start adding shots. Let's just say I did all of these targets twice.

Good catch! I went back in and edited the table so that it matches the data now.
For anyone interested in the target scoring program, the one APP has been mentioned above.
I use a program called "On Target PC", think there is a free version, the paid version is under $20. I paid for the full version.
Works very well. Especially when testing reloads, or as is being done above, accuracy testing. Sometimes the human eye can't discern the group size. It paid off for me with my .308, as I had a load that looked better....but when I ran the program it was actually not the best group.

I shot an unofficial AQT with the Remington today and it functioned flawlessly. I managed to squeak out a 219, even though I was shooting CCI Mini Mags and it was sighted in for Federal Gold Medal Match. I think the trigger is good-to-go:
