SO I have 2 10/22 rifles.
One trigger group has the Volquartsen trigger kit installed, the other has had a trigger job performed by a smith.
Both triggers weigh in at 2.25 lbs.
Perfect for most applications.
Except this one match the CMP offers called Rimfire Sporter. For those matches the triggers need to pick up 3.0 lbs when cocked.
There is my issue. I've scoured the innernet looking for ways to "add weight" to a 10/22 trigger. Heck, even the BX-2 aftermarket is advertised between 2.5 and 3, not close enough for me to buy one.
I have a call into Volquartsen, and they are going to try a few different springs in their shop and get back to me if a spring would fix.
Kidd sells a "spring kit" for their triggers. They have a 3.0, and a 3.5 lb spring.
I'm wondering, could I use the Kidd spring? Would that work?
Any other ideas on how to add more weight to a 10/22 trigger?
Thanks,
Chris
As long as you have a factory trigger, I don't see why the Kidd spring wouldn't work, based on the photos on their website; I've had my trigger springs out to shim them for overtravel, and the mechanism is pretty simple. Or you could always throw some sand in the trigger group and return it to that ol' factory trigger feel.
Sand is not an option Maxwell! LOL
I'm thinking the same...Kidd springs "Should" work.
The hammer and sear kits reduce the grittiness/creep in the mechanism, if you leave the factory trigger return spring in, you maintain a weight nearer to factory. You can also "up" the weight with the factory hammer spring.
I've set up most of my loaners with a Power Custom H&S kit, but left factory springs, as the complete kit ends up just a bit too light for new students to use. On the one I use most, I'll use the PC hammer spring, with the factory trigger return spring.

number6,
So...I do not have the factory springs anymore. Just order a spring kit from Midway or Wolff?

The Kidd 10-22 trigger group has no parts interchangeable with Ruger's trigger group.

Darn, I didn't read the description closely enough; the spring kit does say it's for Kidd's trigger. Thanks for that correction, as I was thinking it might be a cheap improvement for one of mine.

Dang on the Kidd Springs!
Oh well...I ordered em. May just need to upgrade one of the triggers to a Kidd.
I also ordered some Wolff springs, and Ruger springs.
Figure I'll give them a shot....if it doesn't work..., Hmmmmmm, Kidd trigger?
Really not looking to dump another $200 into a $200 rifle! LOL

I bought the power custom hammer for around $35 and the Kidd spring kit. The PC hammer resulted in about a 2.5# pull. I can't remember which color spring I used but it worked fine and got my pull to around 3.2 #. Good to have a little margin. Nice inexpensive and good feeling CMP compliant trigger for about $40 and a little elbow grease.
Bluesteel,
You're saying that the Kidd springs will indeed work?
I just spent $294.95 on a Kidd trigger! LOL
That is OK...., I have yet another 10/22 trigger group to work on.
Yes, this is all for CMP Rimfire Sporter....., local matches may not be a big deal. Any of the GAMES Matches or Nationals...., you will get DQ'd for a trigger that does not make weight.
KIDD trigger group, I specified a custom weight. Want it to HOLD 3.0, and break at 3.25. That would make my day!
Almost like my Garands! They hold 4.5, but break at 4.75!

Hornet makesa 3.25 pound competition trigger. The few Hornet triggers I've seen the owners were happy with them.

Nine years ago I bought the Kidd 2 stage trigger.
Racking the bolt became difficult due to changed geometry, so I bought the Kidd bolt.
It was an expensive experience.
The sticker shock is long gone.
The great trigger and function remains.
I would do it again.

Yes, the Kidd springs will work. I'm a little fuzzy on whether I had to do anything special to make them work (don't think that I did) as I did it almost 2 years ago. I'm sure the Kidd trigger is much better than what I did (which is a little better than the BX kit), but I couldn't justify spending that for a 3.2# trigger for CMP RFS.
I jumped late into this, but what about picking up another factory group and do some light filing to get the grittiness out? And getting dq'd isn't all THAT bad....just kidding it sucks, but I wasn't in medal contention so I still got the shirt.
I think the bx triggers are closer to the 3 than the 2.5. I have two and they both make weight for Rimfire Sporter. To quote one of the guys who weighed the trigger once, "Good thing a mosquito didn't land on the weight".
Miki,
What barrel are you using on your CMP Sporter?

I tried some filing on my factory 10/22 parts but never got it satisfactory. I ended up just buying a power custom trigger/hammer and it's worked great for me. The parts are easy to swap out and if you need some help a quick you-tube video will show you how.
Well...
On the BX-2 trigger, I opted not to go that route due to the advertised break weights. Originally I had ordered the Kidd 2 stage, cost like $300, but...Kidd called me yesterday and stated that there is really no way to get the 2 stage trigger over 3.0 lbs. The single stage is $100 cheaper and adjustable up to 5.0. SO....they set at 3.25 for me and it is on its way.
Hope I don't need to get a Kidd bolt to make it work....but I will if necessary.
Bluesteel, I cancelled the Kidd spring order due to prior comments....I did order some factory springs and also some Wolff springs from Brownells. I'll give those a try and see if I can't get the weights up on my other 2 trigger groups.
One of the trigger groups has a Volquartsen (VQ) trigger kit I installed a long time ago. I contacted VQ and asked if they could provide info, or modify my trigger group to get it over 3.0 lbs. They were pretty cool about it. Said that they were going to prototype swapping springs and see what that does. They were unable to get the trigger over 3.0 lbs. Still suggested I try some different springs and such.
The other trigger group has a trigger job that was performed by a Gunsmith. I have no idea what he did, it is a very smooth trigger and crisp break, but the innards look to be stock still. I'll try springs on that as well.
Closest alligator is getting a CMP Sporter build going and the Kidd will satisfy one of those requirements. Ordered a Volquartsen Lightweight THM tension barrel from them yesterday, as my other bull barrel from them will not make rifle weight requirement. That VQ barrel (THM tension) has some damn fine reviews I am looking forward to installing and dialing it in. Total weight on that barrel is 1 lb 4 ounce!
So..., the build is coming together. Appreciate the comments on ways to get my other triggers up to 3.25. I'll post an update after the springs are received and let all know if that worked.

Hi Mike,
I use a green mountain barrel. Not sure which one. Got it for $80ish during their 12 days of Christmas sale a few years ago.
I ended up going down the exact same path, including the sad phone call to KIDD about not being able to do a 3lb 2-stage and ordering a single stage. On the plus side, it is a nice trigger and the pull is easily adjustable. I've run the single with a Ruger and a JWH bolt without any problems.
For getting a factory or BX trigger to 3lbs, it depends on how experimental and lucky you feel. Diff spring may do it, diff hammers,...etc. My tech-sighted setup has a VQ hammer and it breaks a little over 3lbs.
Simplest way is probably have a 10/22 smith do some magic. Brimstone is highly regarded and their basic job is ~$40.
I went with a Beyer barrel - the 16" bull weighs 18oz, the sporter profile is 11.2oz. With bull barrel, Victor Titan stock, SWFA SS 6x scope, Im at 7lbs, 6.75oz with an empty mag.
KIDD trigger (single stage) arrived on Friday. Definitely a NICE trigger for sure.
Still waiting for the lightweight Volquartsen barrel, they say it will be a couple weeks.
I did however get to build my 8 y/o daughters 10/22 tech sighted rifle on Friday. Magpul X22 stock works awesome. BUT....
I wanted to get a total "weight" on the rifle...so I used my Lyman trigger gage (digital pull) and it comes in just over 5 lbs. I opted to weigh the trigger (not a KIDD...one of my modified trigger groups) and it came in at 3.5 lbs on the Lyman gage.
This is where the note of caution for CMP Rimfire Sporter comes in. Now...technique plays when weighing triggers...I get that. However...I know for a FACT that that trigger group will not HOLD 3.0 on the NRA official weights. SO....
If one is interested in competing with CMP Rimfire Sporter...and it is a "big match"....and your trigger is "close" under/over on the 3.0 lb requirement...I'd highly recommend finding someone with an NRA official weight set (or order your own) to check. You can get them from Brownells....or....if you have a local range that hosts NRA HP or CMP EIC competitions...show up with your rifle and ask them to weigh/check for you.
