Title: m1 garand (front site adjustment)
Post by: m1agsr on November 19, 2016, 05:59:09 PM
I took an old m1 out to the range today and found that i'm 3.5-4 MOA off (left) when the windage knob is on mechanical zero. I'm assuming i have to move the front sight post to the left "a bit" test and go again but.. how do you move it? I can't seem to find an alan wrench that fits.

is it a special tool, or do i need a wider set of alan wrenches?

Or you can leave it alone.
4 MOA ain't nothing really...Plenty of wiggle room there.
But...sounds like ya found the Allen size.

I'd caution you to ensure you get that screw tight.  They have been known to come loose.

yah.. it's tight.. someone set it REALLY tight at one point.. turns out the darn thing is stripped. I guess it's actualy 4.5-5 MOA off.. i dont forsee myself doing serious shooting with this to need to have the full set of clicks for windage.. it just annoys me is all i guess.

might not be worth the pain of resetting w/ a new screw though.. hrm..

You could replace it.  But you'll never ever need that lost 4.5 MOA.

Not even in a typhoon at 2000 yards! Kidding of course...lol

New cap screws (and even new sights) are easy to get from Orion7, but you might have to cut the sight out of the dovetail if you can't get the screw out. Probably not worth that! If the socket head of the screw is stripped, make sure there's no gunk packed in it that keeps the Allen wrench from going in all the way. Maybe try a slightly larger (metric?) size Allen wrench, if you have one.

Short of using a stripped screw remover, which is a not-very-expensive and quite useful tool, there is a hack to get stripped hex screws out.  First put in some penetrating oil to loosen the screw.  Then find a torx driver that's a little too big and made of hard steel.  Tap it into the stripped hex screw with a mallet.  The teeth of the Torx driver will cut into the screw and give you something to work with.  Turn.

If no wind zero is 4 clicks from mechanical zero I would not mess with it. How many clicks of total windage do you have?
