Title: Custom Grip
Post by: m1agsr on September 19, 2016, 11:25:30 AM
I tried someone else's grip which had a palm swell in built in. I'm not sure on cost but it felt better than OEM but not "just right". A friend at work told me about "instamorph". I'm considering making a custom formed over-mold for my OEM grip. I already have a replacement grip in case i totally jack it up.

Has anyone used "instamorph" to make a custom form fitted over-grip? I'm calling it an over-grip (maybe incorrectly) because its going to go OVER the OEM grip, not a remove and replace.

You could do it. But before you move to something like that, it would benefit you to master the basic platform. The thing about the A2 grip is that it can work for everyone. But no matter what you do, you want to grip that rifle like you mean it (particularly in the rapids). You shouldn't be shaking but you should grip hard enough that you can repeat the pressure EVERY SINGLE TIME. You help insure the same pressure by developing indicators that you can repeat until they become subconsious. "High and Tight" is the grip that the AMU teaches. And based on their success, it works.

Dry fire your AR until it doesn't move when you break a shot. Chances are you will find a grip that is firm, high, and allows your finger to move straight back.

When you consitently reach 243 on the AQT or 485 on a Highpower course, then look at custom grips. Another thing that the AMU will tell you is to naturally let your trigger finger fall where it may, once you have your grip. There are a number of positions your finger might take. But the most important thing that you can do, especially for standing is make it SMOOTH.

Read this for some advice from a National Champion, it focuses on standing, but chances are it will help you:

I'm not at that point on AQTs yet but assumed that the more relaxed/comfortable i was.. the better I'll shoot because it's less mussels/discomfort.. less to think about thus increasing consistency.

I have a liberty training set. If i take the time factor out of the equation, I'm consistently hitting the gong plates (which represent only the 4 n 5 portion of the AQT). Thousands of rounds shooting the gong set. Every other set is timed, yet i can only manage to do it (so far) on the non-timed strings. This leads me to believe that I have an NPOA issue, not a grip issue. I have to UN-Learn... things i learned as a kid. Finding the NPOA is key, just hard for me at this time under pressure of a clock.

I mention these things because, while I value all feedback, I don't see that changing the grip will hinder my learning process. I did change the grip on both my ar-15 and my 15-22... so they are consistent.

The take home i get from the article linked above is, build a foundation.. then shoot. Decent read. The pre-loading of calf mussels via slight elevation under toes.. is interesting.
