Title: 308 Suppressor on 5.56?
Post by: m1agsr on July 14, 2016, 12:27:41 PM
I've read places that you can do it.. etc etc but i'm hung up on a detail. The ar15 thread pitch is one size and the 308 is another pitch. In an attempt to cut down costs etc etc... i'm trying to use only one supressor (30cal) on my 308 and ar15 (5.56/.223).

Does anyone have experience in this other than keyboard warrior type experience like myself?

I run a YHM Ti Phantom .30 cal can on my 308 AR, FAL, 300 Blackout AR, 5.56 Tavor and AR.  Most large cans are direct thread...you buy a suppressor or flashhider that are the interface to the can.

Sound difference of a 308 can on a 5.56 (vs a 5.56 specific can) is negligible.  There is a difference but not enough for me to go and drop another $800-1000 for the can and $200 tax stamp.

Talking to the guys at the local shop that has been selling them since Minnesota removed all state restrictions on private ownership of suppressors:

yes, you can use a 7.62  suppressor on a 5.56 AR.

yes, they make thread adapters

here is one for $30

Yes, you should be able to use the .308 suppressor with the 5.56.  For example, I chose "The Hybrid" by SilencerCo

https://silencerco.com/silencers/hybrid/ (https://silencerco.com/silencers/hybrid/)

QuoteThe Hybridâ,,¢ is the silencer for any platform. Compatible with calibers ranging from 5.56mm to 9mm, .45-70 GOV to .458 SOCOM, and many in between, the Hybrid is both full auto and magnum-rated and can be used on pistols, rifles, and submachine guns. Boasting low-120 dB's on 300BLK and remaining hearing-safe with .45-70, the Hybrid offers an unparalleled pairing of versatility and performance - a combination you've come to expect from SilencerCo products.

The Hybrid is rated down to 16˝ barrels for .45-70 and .458 SOCOM and down to 18˝ barrels for all magnum calibers up to .338. With a slew of compatible accessories available, you can turn the Hybrid into the perfect silencer for any demand.

Depending on the particular one you want though you need to make sure the company offers some sort of thread adapter to make the .308 usable on the 5.56

So, for mine the manufacturer said,

QuotePistons are for pistols, any kind of rifle you are putting it on will need either a direct thread mount or a ASR Mount with a ASR Muzzle Brake

In short a suppressor can be used on smaller calibers than it is designed for, but the caveat being that you will need a different mount or adapter.

Hope this helps.

If you are going to be swapping the can among various rifles, you might consider getting one that is compatible with Quick Detach flash hiders / comps that serve as the attachment point on the rifle.  This way, you can quickly move the can from one to another and don't have to worry about removing/installing your muzzle device each time.  There are many manufacturers who offer this kind of setup.  Here is one example:  http://www.gem-tech.com/store/pc/QUICKSAND-10p122.htm

They offer mounts for various thread pitch barrels that will work with their 30cal cans.  See here:  http://www.gem-tech.com/store/pc/7-62MM-Quickmount-for-HVT-and-Quicksand-595-32-M1A-59p318.htm

Whatever company you go with for something like this, I would definitely contact their customer service department in advance to make sure you are ordering the correct components for your needs.

I posted the same/similar question over at MDShooters. Got similar answer but this explains what direct thread is vs DQ via flashhider interface. THANKS.

I pass out targets and redcoats at work with an enthusiastic voice to encourage people to go, but not sure i'm able to commit to it yet (orange hat).... i stole the sig block from someone else and put in my date.

I've shot a .22LR, 45ACP, 300blk, 5.56 all suppresed but it was also at the local range. THIS SUNDAY, a friend is going to bring his suppressors over so we can see how loud they are in a hunting application vice at the range.
